Cycling thread

Fortunate that our winter weather locally is quite mild, plan to put in as many miles as I can the next few months. Not yet into trainers, plus don't have room for such at our house at the moment. But looks like I'll log just under 1200 miles this year, not bad for starting in August more or less. Also hit just around 50 as a long ride, so that was a nice mark. Setting goals of 3000 miles and a race (of some sort) in 2021.

11 loops of box hill?!
Yeah, but in zwift world they have an accurate map of central London which is magically connected to the Surrey Hills. So it was 15km laps taking in central London and Box hill eleven times (said it was boring!).

I believe the Box hill climb is faithfully represented, we did it in 9 and a half minutes fastest, but after 130 odd km that felt like a deep effort (and I"m not much of a climber).

Not done the festive 500 but knocked off an indoor century today, the PRL full on zwift. Hardest route as it is so boring, but did it with a friend who is a bit of a beast, and got driven round basically. Just that Box hill needed an effort, eleven times up it and we did it faster each time, until the tenth blew me up. Last two laps were v tough.
Best part of 6 hours on the turbo is not something Ill be repeating, but felt ok considering. A lot less sore than the last long one I did.
Snow yesterday and ice today meant the attempt at an outdoor festive 500 was abandoned - I did even try to get out on the missus's hybrid, but even that was sliding all over the road.

So 3 hours on the turbo, but with no Zwift. Now that's hard work to stay motivated!

Right decision to respect ice mate. Even the most grizzled of roadie hardmen will park it up when roads are icy.

Something on the telly usually works if you're racking miles on the turbo.

In the market for a new road bike. Budget is up to 1.5k. Components must be 105+. Not fused with the wheels as ill swap them from my current bike.

Cyclocross world champs this weekend, and I believe it's on the BBC. 2.10 both days, women sat, men mon.

Tom Pidcock has raced shoulder to shoulder with van Aert and van der Poel this season but the course might not suit him at all - it's got a massive amount of sand, literally up against the seashore in Oostende. Racing through sand is the type of thing you do in Belgium as soon as you're off the teat, but it's rare here and TP isn't known for it. Also favours outright Watts so van Aert expected to take it right up into vdP's kitchen.

Facebook marketplace has some good stuff - loads bought bikes last March and rode them twice. You can usually filter out the absolute whoppers from their profile but you still need to be a bit patient. I guess new stock in the shops is still hit and miss.

Yeah tbh I'm not too keen on playing the second hand game. Rather just buy new and get the guarantee that comes with it. I'd push my budget up to 2k for the right bike.

What do you want to get out of it? I ask because my Focus is probably 12 years old now so "could" be upgraded, but increasingly when I go abroad to have nice rides I rent a bike out there as it's less hassle than boxing/shipping my bike, so spending a decent whack to ride on the same pothole-riddled roads of the UK isn't really worth it. For the 2k I get 4-5 trips abroad with rental thrown in (and having rented several bikes over the years, the difference between them is negligible - the biggest thing is to get one that fits).

Im not too fussed about taking it abroad. That's about 0.1% of the cycling I'd be doing. My existing bike is 5 1/2 years old now. It's fine but feels a little sluggish. There's always minor nagging issues with it. I've stripped it down had it serviced and there's still annoying creaks and sounds coming out of it. Tbh I just don't want to spend much more money on it and I'll relegate it to winter bike status. It also has an 'Endurance' geometry with quite an upright position on the bike. I'd like something a bit more responsive, lighter and potentially something I could race. Also had a bad 6 months with a close family bereavement so I just want to treat myself to something nice.

As you're switching your wheels over, I presume you could just go for a frame? Wiggle have a dogma F8 for 2k.

Other than the shifters my components are Tiagra, so would want un upgrade on those too. I'd still ride the old bike so I'd need to keep it together. Building a bike isn't a bad shout though.

This is quite good from Froome, seems like a typical pro endorsing his sponsors new bike, until he gets to the brakes - which are basically [Poor language removed].

Completely right IME - I've used disks on the MTB for 20 years without problems but they are way, way more hassle on the road. Reckon the problems can be solved but right now they're a headache.
