Does it have to be on a smart trainer though? I trialed it a long time ago (4/5 years) and manged to race using my cadence sensor and imputing my own stats. I guess it was far more crude back then with far fewer people with smart trainers.

No, you can use a dumb trainer, and it uses an algorithm to figure out your speed etc. Some race organisers won't allow you to get a result, but apart from that you'll have no issues.

@Disgruntledgoat this kind of showing off is common (from the Zwift FB page today)

Sweat catchers and everything.... That's what a towel is for.

I bet he wears pro kit. Or only buys Rapha.

And the "Suffer" painting... I really hate all that "Epic. Giants of the Road. Warrior monk" nonsense. If you're in your nice warm house you're not suffering. You're playing at it and you can stop any time you like. At worst you're temporarily uncomfortable.

Changing your 3rd flat of the day in the dark when you can't feel your fingers and you still have 150km to go in the wind and rain is real misery.

Actually, from personal experience, lying on cold asphalt unable to stand up because you've broken your pelvis in three places and then waiting 15 minutes for somebody to pass by and call an ambulance because you left phone at home, having to direct that person to the website of your girlfriend's business so they can call her (cos you don't know her phone number off the top of your head), going to hospital only to discover you left your wallet at home with your ID and insurance card in it so you'll get the bill for the ambo and A&E later... spend 10 days in hospital, another 2 weeks in bed wondering where the bills are and wondering for months until (thanks to them going to your ex wife's house who sits on them watching them grow until the debt collectors show up... Then she redirects them) some goons show up at your door to write down all your stuff to be taken away if you don't cough up within a month... meanwhile your €400 bill is now €2300. That's suffering for your cycling. lol lol lol

Which Zwift world was that? Might give it a go later lol

Virtual power set up will probably be enough to tell you if you like it enough to subscribe. There's also a smart tacx one from Halfords for £200 - plenty of folk use that for zwift, just lacks a heavy flywheel so can't give you high resistance for some of the mountain simulations. If you get into it then you can buy something better at a later date.

Hate turbo trainers. I have a pretty low boredom threshold. You're right to say that it's difficult to suffer physically indoors but you can suffer mentally. I figure prison time must feel similar.

It does mean I end up training less over the winter - though some of my most memorable rides have been in long rides in those months, often chasing the sunset home (last year my cleats froze solid when I unclipped in some inclement weather in the Peaks which made for an interesting descent).

I'm tempted to try Zwift but my better self knows it'd be a fad for a month before I get bored again.

Some people don't even respond that well to interval training on the turbo, or if they do they just get ill from going too deep on the intervals in cold season. So it could easily be that you get fitter just with more natural, mixed riding outside. Only thing is if you're a roadie then ice must be respected, and means the roads will be out of commission for a bit in UK winter.
It's also a bit dodgy doing intense, sickener intervals outside on the road IME, depending on where you live - much more controllable on the turbo.

Having a few days riding in Girona. Lovely place to ride. Great weather and nothing too challenging.

It was a pleasant enough weekend, but I'm a bit baffled as to why it's 'so' popular with the pros. We only did a couple of loops (and omitted Rocacorba because it rained a bit and the descent is sketchy), but the climbs we did were typically ~10km @ 4% or so, so were all done in the big ring fairly comfortably. It was nice weather and the roads were pretty quiet, but I would have thought the pros would want something a bit more challenging?

Mumsnet in meltdown as Rachel Mckinnon defends her masters track sprint title at the weekend (took place at Manchester velodrome). A bit of a charade tbh, and the public ear does not seem to be at Mckinnon's disposal this time round. I mean obv the Mumsnet crowd despise her, but haven't heard anything positive from anyone really about a large natal male contesting a women's track sprint (the ultimate high power event in cycling).
