Sagan it was! Those climbs lost the really fast sprinters.
First real stage for the climbers today. Some time gaps may start to appear.
TdF doesn't seem to be popular with Evertonians?

Shows what I know. I had it on damned good authority from three separate people (I'm a cycling journo by trade) that he's in a bit of a state this year.

At least my pick got 2nd.

I love the Tour as a spectacle (who doesn't?), and will prob watch today's stage at work. I'm not that passionate about the actual competition I have to say, GT cycling is a bit of a circus - I appreciate the strategic elements but I'd prefer to watch a bike race at the end of the day. My favourite discipline is cyclocross so I'd like to see WvA do well - he's looking strong, as long as the mountains don't completely iron him out a stage win is on the cards I reckon.

Heard the other day that van der Poel is racing the Tour of Britain in September - I believe he'll be contesting the World Champs later in the month which are also in the UK. They'll be going up a local hill to me near Manchester so be good to get out and watch MvdP crush it.

Must agree that apart from the scenary the "racing" can be a bit boring. Le Tour evolves slowly like a 5 day test in cricket. For action one day events are better, I saw the French championships on tv à couple of weeks ago, now that was racing, attack after attack all afternoon.

One of my favourite parts of France, Les Vosges. Doesn't have the epic landscapes of the Alps but it's a great area to visit - endless forests on rounded sort of hills. Only ever mountain biked / hiked round there but the road cycling must be exceptional.

Savage finish on the planche there - great showing from Thomas, made a statement that he's here to defend the jersey. Alaphilipe also showed his steel.

Heartbreaker for the Italian rider who came second - broken at the very last by Teuns after going with him all the way up.

Well his consolation is that he's in yellow.
That final km was brutal.

I find the sport itself incredibly dull and I'm always a bit suspicious of the drugs thing - like athletics.
But I love watching the Tour because it reminds me of hitch-hiking around France in the 70s going through all those sun-blasted little villages.
