Went to sixth form with Liam, mad to see him playing for England now.

Both him and Chris Jordan turned down new contracts at Sussex,so sorry to see them both leave but hope they both do well in the future. It won’t affect our 4 day team as only Salt had a red ball contract and I think he will be in England squads in the future. The Blast team is more of a franchise team so I am sure we will get replacements in. Hope they can leave with a trophy win in the finals.
I think Smith did miss one and Labuschagne missed a couple didn't he (albeit due to selection). Ironically I actually think England win that series had Anderson been fit. You think of the hole Australia were in day 1, but we were a bowler light and they got away. While I'm not sure he gets Smith out, he probably helps bowls the rest out. So I actually think we win Edgebaston had he been fit, though in fairness the rest of the series had a number of 1 sided games (aside from Headingly). The caveat to this is that I think England would have been fortunate to win and that overall a draw was probably the fair result across an excellent series. But they deserve credit for playing so well.
New Zealand don't play much, hut all the more credit for them being able to rock up here and win in 2 games. And as you say against a stronger line up, so al credit due.
As for England and experience, agree wholeheartedly. I popped something above about the batting and experience. It looks like they've settled on Malan and Bairstow, who along with Buttler are world class one day players (and I don't use that term lightly) who while not entirely suited to test cricket remain extremely talented. The experiment of the younger players just hasn't worked. Sibley, Pope, Lawrence, Bracey and even (my favourite) Crawley just have not given the dividends one might begin to expect for the investment of time provided in them. I'd say a re-think has been sought before the Ashes, that actually those lads being pummelled 5-0 won't do anything for anyone. I suspect Pope and Crawley will be drip fed back in slowly but from more of a position of strength (I.e good County form and the team winning).
Bairstow seems one of those who gets a lot of criticism. He is Englands 2nd highest run scorer this series and the 4th highest in the series thus far. He's not perfect by any stretch but he's a lot better than what is currently available. I much prefer a late middle order with him in than most of the names above. In Australia, Bairstow, Malan, Stokes and Buttler (I hope Stokes is back) to work around Root feels a lot more stable than what we had previously. I suspect Ali will be 8 and there will likely be at least 1 of Curran, Robinson, Overton or Woakes at 9. It gives the batting a much sturdier feel, and I do think we have bowlers who can cause them some problems.

Agree with all but not this on NZ. I'm not sure whether I expressed myself so well but I think playing such short tours with two one-off matches, as an excuse for a series, is a positive advantage to the home side not the reverse.
The test schedule is packed with little chance for away sides to properly acclimatise, it should therefore follow that generally the shorter the series the better for the home side, of course there are plenty of examples of a home side starting badly often for other reasons, but it should be at least one definite advantage all other things being equal - which they rarely are with injuries etc. I really detest these two one-off matches as the focus of mini tours but realise financial reasons are largely behind it.- I wouldn't even include them in test records tbh.
England had a much weaker line up against NZ not stronger, partly due to selecting potential ahead of proven experience - but for whatever reason I thought their line up experimental at best - and that's being kind.
Yes all very fair. I think they probably under estimated New Zealand.

Salt to Lancs has been rumoured since the Davies departure was announced. The great thing about Davies was that he contributed in all forms of the game, and was never picked by England. I notice Salt only averages 30 in 38 1st class appearances. I can't remember if I've seen him play in the Championship - if I have he mustn't have scored many - do you think he has the game to play properly, or is he all crash, bang, wallop?
Hopefully the boost that we needed, as said, a bit unlucky in the afternoon session and probably did enough to get a couple of wickets.
Don't think I've seen Anderson bowl so many poor balls in years. Such a surprise when he goes for any sort of runs

I think he got a couple of centuries in the championship.He plays the same way,whatever the competition.Has a tendency to get out pulling early on in his innings. However he plays positively from the first ball,which I like in an opener.
Last season he appeared to have tightened up his defence but he didn’t play this season due to injury. Needless to say his one day game will help Lancashire deal with the loss of Davies.
