Rory Burns to replace the absent Jos Buttler as vice captain in the continued absence of the actual vice captain Ben Stokes.

Team is almost certainly

Burns, Hameed, Malan, Root (c), Pope, Bairstow (wk), AIi, Woakes, Overton (or Wood), Robinson, Anderson

No spinner again then. I wonder what the pitch will be like, I see Bess took 2-34 and made 54 against Yorkshire.

I'm happy with that. I might have considered resting Anderson but I suppose he only bowled 34 overs in the last test and its now a slightly longer break between tests.

The new individual test batting rankings come out this week and even if Root is still behind Williamson in the official rankings, rankings slways being to an extent backward looking rather than up to date, it's abundantly clear that Joe Root is right now the best batsman in the world.

Playing more than half his tests with a Dukes ball on tough to bat on wickets makes his average of around 50 far more meritorious than a higher average with a Kookaburra and flatter wickets. For any English batsman it's so much harder to get near the top of the rankings because English conditions and a Dukes ball mean all batting averages suffer.

Kohli shows just how difficult he finds it almost every time he bats in England. Tbh it makes me appreciate just how well Sir Alistair Cook did as opening the innings in England over such a long period and still averaging over 40 is incredible, it's pretty much as difficult as it gets for s batsman, when having to constantly open the innings in England

I would pick that side. The only difficult call will be Wood or Overton but unless the wicket is going to be very quick, I would probably give Overton another go because he played well. Woakes for Curran feels like a no brainer. He's a slightly better batter and a much better bowler.

Joe Root goes to number one

Test batting rankings

1. Joe Root - 916pts
2. Kane Williamson - 901 pts
3. Steve Smith - 891 pts
4. Marnus Labuschagne - 878 pts
5. Rohit Sharma - 773 pts

So the top four relatively close with a huge gap to the best of the rest and the best current Indian batsman Rohit Sharma

Was hoping to go to New Road today to see Sussex but watching cricket in a big coat and hat is not the best way to spend a day. Also yesterday bad light stopped play on a few occasion. Shame as Sussex are doing well on a wicket which is not easy to bat on.

Will be good to see woakes back. Missed him massively.
Me too but I'd question how ready he is to play a 5 day test having had just one T20 game as preparation. I suppose it depends on how he's looking in the nets and whether he feels ready. I wouldn't like to see Overton left out after his performance in the last game.

Yes it is a gamble on his fitness. Think the consensus is that he'd replace Curran.

Excellent morning so far for Lancashire : Lunch, 215-2, Bohannon 104, Vilas 55.

Another well constructed and chanceless innings by Bohannon but the pitch! Only chance of a result is for Lancs to bat through today and into tomorrow and hope their is finally some turn and enough time to bowl Warwick out. Unlikely. Thankfully this is the last game for them at Old Trafford this season!
