Cricket

India must have Deja vu feeling that it's 2014 all over again. They can be number one ranked in the world (they're not that atm anyway) and England ranked a million miles behind Gibraltar, but as night follows day, any England team, no matter weakened or not, invariably hammers India in England.

2014

test one
India dominate but weather intervenes 0-0,

test two India win easily and seem set to take control 0-1

test three at Headingley, against all odds England win easily 1-1

test four England well on top again as the momentum seems to have turned 2-1

test five England finish in style for a comfortable series win 3-1

I reckon a repeat looks highly likely now

Chris Woakes looks on the verge of a timely return to the England squad and must be odds on to be a straight swap for the hapless and misfiring Sam Curran at number eight. A far better bowler and you'd have to say atm a far better batsman too.

With the return of experience in Bairstow, Malan and now Woakes, often over players who may do something in a decade or so like Crawley, Pope, Lawrence etc, this England side is looking stronger by the test.

For India the main problems look to be more problematic.

The batting looks devoid of any depth with four number elevens and four of the proper batsmen struggling anyway. The main batting worries are Rahul, Kohli, Pant and Rahane - Rahul made two failures while Rahane and Pant have had series to forget with the bat.

Kohli seemed to have adapted his technique for England in 2018 but perhaps the predominance of white ball cricket has made him forget what's needed over here. He's reverted to the technique which has given him so many problems before in England in previous tours. Kohli's fifty was only one so far this series and has a clear Anderson problem. He is now prone to nicking off to most of the other bowlers too, and is using a poor technique for English conditions.

Their bowling is simply improved, drop Ishant Sharma - only Kohlis obstinacy and insistence on Sharma over Ashwin has blunted their attack. Kohli is all powerful and if he insists on four seamers who can't bat he gets it.

With Woakes and Wood available I would drop Curran and rest one of either Anderson or Robinson. If Buttler misses test Bairstow would get the gloves and Pope gets another chance. I think I would probably rest Anderson as he will be better at Old Trafford and I suspect Anderson will definitely needed rested somewhere. If we get amongst them early I can see this being another test we dominate but the key is to not be 15/2 when batting as it puts us under so much extra pressure.

As above posts

England squad changes

Woakes in

Billings replaces absent Buttler, Bairstow to keep wicket

Wood back in contention

I reckon Pope will replace Buttler at six, Woakes will replace Curran at eight. Wood or Overton for one place depending on wicket more conducive to seam or pure pace.

With an eye to the ashes they might be more inclined to wrap Wood in cotton wool since Archer and Ollie Stone won't be touring and you need real pace on Aussie wickets.

I reckon

Burns, Hameed, Malan, Root, Bairstow (wk), Pope, Ali, Woakes, Overton, Robinson, Anderson

Woakes for Curran, Pope for Buttler for me

Warwickshire won the toss and are batting, currently 37-2, Bailey with both wickets.

Sussex all out for 264,not bad considering it was 97-6 at one stage. Good start to the innings, poor middle and a great tail. Credit to Ali Orr for another 50 and Jack Carson for his 87.Leach bowled well for Worcs.
