Cricket

Only watched the first session because I was off to the match but heard Michael Holding's comments about Farokh Engineers weight and thought it was pretty tasteless and classless. Whilst he was well before my time he's a legend in these parts for his time at Lancashire and didn't deserve to have the pee took out of him like that.

If we can restrict them to 250 that will mean we need to get 225 which I think is achievable any more they are favourites any less we are favourites. Anderson getting out maybe wasn't a bad thing as it means he isn't messing about in the morning he can get up in the morning and solely focus on his bowling. I like The Hundred but test cricket is what I really love and it should still be the pinnacle of the sport. I hope they keep it at 5 days.

Game is exactly where you would want it. Both teams can still win, or it could be a draw. I think I'd slightly rather be England because early wickets can put a lot of pressure on India, but it's basically 50:50.

Perfectly poised. You always want the team batting 2nd to have a slight lead. For England's sake hope we get a 3-4 wickets in the morning session. I tend to agree England are slight favourites. Also I think chasing might suit some of our batsmen with their white ball mind set.

The wicket looks good to me still, but that was maybe just because of how Root played. 270 should be possible if India make around 300. Wouldn't want to chase over 230 mind you.

Also they left Ashwin out which favours us if it goes to day 5. It will be a good 2 days cricket whatever happens. If only we could sort that top 3.

Captain Courageous Joe Root's brilliant 180 not out and his fifth century of 2021 (two in England too) has given England a first innings lead for the first time in six months.

Great support from Rory Burns and England's second best batsman in this team Jonny Bairstow has helped Joe to now average more than 50 in tests. A remarkable feat considering he plays half his tests in England in far more bowler friendly conditions. I thought Moeen and Buttler looked good before getting out but it's the greater experience in the middle order that made the difference. No more Lawrence, Crawley and Pope's but experienced hands, those who can switch from white ball to red ball having not played red ball for months. The different stance Bairstow adopts for tests and one days indicative of them being two different gsmes., He's thought about it and now gets over across with his back leg making him play straighter more often in tests.

This is still a very understrength England line up without our second best batsman and world class star Ben Stokes', Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and even Ollie Stone but still one that's proved competitive. So an encouraging batting display which gives them a chance to push for a win.

yes...and that kind of presents a convincing case for a visiting team to have the choice of batting or bowling (i.e. no toss)...at least in the very first test match of a series. When we last toured Aussie , (and got torn a new one), we lost the 1st test toss and fielded in 40 degree Perth heat for a looong time...we never recovered from that ordeal in my view.

Crucially we also went without our one big talisman Ben Stokes. The team was completely unbalanced as it invariably is without its key member.

It's not Michael Holdings fault he's allowed himself to turn into a walking heart attack.

Legend or not he's a fat mess
