A day of two 'halves' i suppose, West Indies were brilliant for the first hour and quite shocking for the next five

:D:D:D:D

Seriously though what a first hour, the Windies quicks Roach and Gabriel, the former especially, were right on the money, the two overnight batsmen back in the hutch in no time plus the added bonus of Woakes and Archer for hardly any. Four wickets for around 18 runs and England were reeling, all the worst fears of fielding such a huge tail of bowlers were being realised, the nightmare was reality.

Then came superman Stuart Broad swinging were others had feared to go, a batsman so well hidden we thought he was a bowler. Swing mightily he did and in next to no time Holder had not only lost control, he was desperate, plan A wasn't working and he didn't have a plan B. England went from 280-8 to 369 and with it you suspected went the match. 111 runs added by lunch - the tail had been skittled but Broad's heroics meant another truly impressive total after being inserted.

England's new star all rounder Stuart Broad he of 'the flashing blade', was now in one happy mood, he was back with his favoured discipline - bowling, and he knew the Windies were there for the taking and he was all over them. The other seamers just took inspiration from the man of the moment and with conditions favourable the Windies collapsed. 59-4 then worse, 73-5 spelt huge trouble, and while Holder and Blackwood rescued some respectability in came Woakes with a corker to clean up Blackwood. Game over well almost.

If the weather rescues the Windies they should donate the old trophy to the bin as they hardly deserve a draw.

The usual down the shop quick chat about england then onto pakistan - shopkeeper is a pakistan follower , he is excited as am i about seeing young shah i think he`s still 16 yrs old , few 1st class matches wickets at 17 a piece , my friendly shop-keeper still thinks his beloved fellow country men are very hot n cold and he is not confident in english conditions - however this shah lad in english conditions dukes ball might go well after all wasim waqar and imran khan always done well.

The umpiring in this series has been far from impressive

I know Gough had one poor decision where he gave it out when it was going down but that really was so surprising as it was he who actually got one wrong.

For my money Gough has been exceptionally good

Richard Kettleborough has been average with a few mistakes

Richard Illingworth has been exceptionally poor with a multitude of poor decisions, even when not overturned it's invariably umpire's call. A trigger finger if ever there was one.

Gough though really has had a tremendous series.

Umpire's first test Kettleborough and illingworth - standard very poor

Second test Gough and Illingworth - chalk and cheese really - Gough excellent, Illingworth nightmare

Third test - no Illingworth so prospects looked far better - one or two errors but nothing in the Illingworth class

It may not have the sunny day predicted here but the forecast isn't too bad for Manchester today, a cloudy day with the possibility of early rain.

There seems no chance of any play tomorrow with all the North West due for a day of showers and heavier rain, but Tuesday looks another dry and cloudy one so they really should get the time without Monday.

West Indies had a good first 40 mins or so, but as yesterday - doing well for fractions isn't enough if you're abysmal the rest of it. Broad came on and on cue they collapsed in a heap going from 178-6 to all out for 197.

They'll possibly be practicing their rain dance right now.

Only rain can save the West indies now. Ideally England can have a half hour in the field tonight but even if that's not possible, 98 overs on Tuesday should be enough.

Ideally they can extend the lead to around 350 and declare tonight. Need to aim to score at around 3.5 an over.

Broad is an outstanding bowler these days. Not sure hes bowled as consistently well at any time during his career.

I'm sure they were short that session even with the two between innings must be around 62 overs left (after lunch)

45 overs batting and 180 ahead need a lead over 350 to make sure they've easily enough time and they wont lose the game. No need to dangle the carrot if they don't have to.

So 170 in 45 should be doable, set a platform for hitters later, go for as many as possible and leave an hour tonight I reckon
