That was surprising as not leaked at all, maybe better keeping their plans secret anyway imo, if journos can find out so can the opposition.

Bat down to eight again but reliant on Bess continuing to make a contribution with the bat at 8 and Woakes showing he's a proper all rounder at 7. Bowling first was probably the right call if you're hoping to win a potentially shortened match, even without favourable bowling conditions.

England produced a perfect performance to just about win in four last time, but batting first makes it extremely difficult and only nigh on perfection may be enough to win in the time available.

A batsman short with their new stated aim of batting big runs first up puts a massive pressure on the remaining five, with hardly any being able to fail, so trying to do it the hard way with absolutely no room for error. A hell of a lot to ask knowing their fallibility.

I do wonder if they potentially earmark Bess as a bit of an allrounder? It's a strange selecton either way. The bowlers are well rested, do we really need 5 + Stokes and Root?

To me they've fudged a decision on Broad/Anderson & Woakes here. If Broad was due to be rested, then rest him. If not Woakes should have missed out for the extra batsman.

It probably is a draw, at least losing the toss and having to bat first has made sure England are unlikely to have the time, however well they play, and only one side even has a chance of playing well and winning.

The batting is too weak and the batsmen all a place too high, dropping a batsman is asking for trouble. Root shouldn't have risked any single that just wasn't on but it took a direct hit and careless mistakes do happen. The problem is with an early wicket, always likely under initially cloudy skies, we can't afford any batters to fail.

Apart from the run out they've recovered well from an early setback but I fear it's all academic.

Lancashire's fixtures announced for the truncated County Championship: five in all ,with the last being at Aigburth against Derbyshire.

Hampshire’s “home” games not even in Hampshire. At the beautiful Arundel Castle ground where Sussex play once a season. Idyllic there. You follow a path through some woods and arrive in a natural amphitheater.
Would definitely go if it wasn’t for Covid. There again they wouldn’t be playing there if there was no Covid.
Anyhow; Arundel, highly recommended.
