Cricket

The wicket is starting to play a few tricks, looks as though not batting last on it was the primary reason for Stokes batting first. The batting conditions were probably at their best in the latter half of yesterday and the first hour this morning, so in hindsight it doesn't look too good a decision. The perhaps unexpected time lost on day two to add to that on day one made it look even worse than it actually was.

On Broad, I think they've made the decision really with their eye firmly on the ashes in Australia more than this match. You can definitely argue it's the wrong approach and they should play the opposition in front of them but you can't really win either way. Without getting test match overs this summer into the real quicks they will be in a poor state to take on Australia in their own backyard. There it's only real pace that pays dividends and it'll be primarily Wood and Archer, probably joined by Stone who will be their main hopes. They may have fallen between two stools and selected the wrong team here but the ashes are far more important to most cricket fans, even if they pay lip service to the other series, no spectators hardly helps.
