Cricket

I thought we were the sheep-botherers lol . Aussies are too busy cheating in sports to be worried about their livestock.
The Aussies are very much ‘love ‘em, leave ‘em’ types when it comes to affairs with livestock. Kiwis tend to form longer term relationships. I guess the different historical backgrounds may play part in this; Kiwis came from loving, nurtured environments whereas Aussies, coming from convict stock, are more inclined toward a ‘wham bam thank you lamb’ instant gratification...

Not talking specifically about Mahmood, but i'm not sure I agree with that. Particularly as a bowler, modifying your game to make you a safer bet for county cricket is not the way to make yourself a test player. There's a lot to be said for talented young players being fast tracked into the international set up so that they don't get suckered into becoming reliable county trundlers.
Yes there's something in what you say. However, having watched almost all of his bowling in the 2nd Division last season, I don't think Mahmood is anywhere near ready for test cricket. He's nowhere near Anderson, of course, and even the 39 year old Onions is better than him. Gleeson is quicker and Bailey has more skill and control, although Saqib is quicker. England 20/20 and one days I'm fine with and they should be a great learning experience for him.

Your point probably applies more to someone like Parkinson, who deserves his chance even though he's still learning. His batting and fielding could do with improving though!

Yeah, as I say it's not specifically about Mahmood, more just a general point.

I've coached some very exciting young bowlers at county level, but counties get wary of playing them because they're erratic. They'd rather pick the 33 year old journeyman who bowls wicket to wicket, keeps it tight and and picks up LBWs than the 20 year old who can bowl 88mph but will go for a few runs. That's perfectly understandable from the county's perspective of course. What usually happens though, is the bowler modifies their bowling in order to get more chances in county cricket, they lose a bit of pace, start pitching it up more, become more reliable and so start playing more. Mission accomplished. But now they're no longer a hot prospect because the England team isn't looking for 80mph steady eddies. Then we go to Australia, get hammered, and everyone complains that our bowlers are too slow and all the same.

All too true, sadly. We have to trust that Chapple and Onions have a bit more common sense than some coaches! I know last season Lancs kept their bowlers fresh by rotating them, which helps. More pitches than encourage quick bowling would be a good idea: fine cricketer that he is, it can't be a good thing when a 43 year old Darren Stevens can pick up over 50 wickets in the 1st Division last season.

Having watched highlights of all three Tests the Aussies have played during their summer so far, I have to say what's happened to their crowds?

Cricket is generally massive over there. So they must be disappointed with attendances in recent times. It looked the same when I watched their home Tests a year ago. Surely it can't be just once every four years when the English are over that their stadiums are full for Test matches?

Is Test cricket over there losing appeal except when it's the Ashes? That would be sad if it's the case as cricket is synonymous with Australia.

Other than the AFL *spits - crowds are poor at all sports here basically. 2 things i attribute it to are cost and simply easier to watch on tv. Oh and laziness which is rife in this country

Solid day for England : 309-4. Root 72 (retired), Denley 60 (retired, Sibley 58 (retired), the other six batsmen all reached double figures, none though over 28.

England's 2 day tour match ended in a draw. The South Africa 11 made 289. The wickets were shared : Woakes 3-48, Root 2-21, Curran 2-45, Anderson 1-37. Parkinson expensive 20-0-112-2.
