Cricket

Can hardly believe this. ‘Willis' family said he had died "after a long illness". A long illness? He was only on Sky Sports a few weeks ago surely?

He was last on Sky after the final days play of the last Ashes Test in mid-September. He hadn't been on the cricket debate at any point during the current New Zealand tour but Charles Colville did mention a few times he'd been unwell but would be returning to the studio for his usual show with Colville for the coming Test matches against South Africa.

Cancer

Wouldn’t have known tbh.

Watching Manc derby and Tyler mentioned that Big Bob was a rabid City fan ... so he too had many dark days like us blues

Thanks for 1981 Bob. RIP

Don’t see Jimmy lasting the tour tbh. Should have retired in the summer

37 years old, in his 17th year of test cricket now. Amazing longevity for a seamer. I wouldn't quite put him in the same category as a Glenn McGrath / Walsh/Ambrose / Richard Hadlee, but he's been a world-class performer for longer than any other seamer I can think of.

In the mid/late 1960's I played football for Ossett Town in the Yorkshire League. I was centre-half and playing alongside me at right-half was Barry Wood. Barry was opening bat for Lancashire (even though he was a Yorkshire lad) and also had some games for England. He was also a very good footballer. I was always surprised that Lancashire allowed him to play football with high risk of injury. He always missed the first few games of the season and the last few as cricket took priority.

Big Barry Wood fan. An opener in the Boycott mould - his idol. Very good all-rounder in 1 Day cricket with his little medium pacers - won loads of MoM awards. Sadly left Lancs under a cloud when he chose to join Derby (as captain) the season after he'd had a then record breaking benefit year. Used to see him at OT after he retired watching his son Nathan play.

Mind, Mahmood didn’t rip up trees in the ODIs but I would have taken him if for the experience if nothing else
Mahmood worth a go in 20/20 but should be nowhere near the test squad. He's 5th choice seamer at Lancs, behind Anderson (if fit and available), Onions, Bailey, and Gleeson. He had a mixed year in the Championship last season - some good spells mixed in with some poor ones, usually when he bowled too short. He's got potential but needs to establish himself at Lancs before he plays for England.

Like Ian Botham playing centre half for Scunthorpe!

Not disputing that although Bumble thinks he (Mahmood) has something about him

There is also the political angle of attracting players of Asian extraction in to the England game
