Glutton for punishment after Leicester but thought I'd submit myself to more by watching the test in NZ.

Excellent piece by Rob Key (my favourite pundit on any channel) on the state of the art of batting in today's county championship.

Charles Colville tried to take him on but was just taken apart and torn to shreds by Rob and Jonathan Trott, batting in the county game is at an all time low standard. No wonder we struggle for openers.

Pope needs to hit out or get out

Its tough when the runs dry up and you can't see where the next one is coming from. I remember Nick Compton getting into a terrible mindset where his shots completely dried up, defending full tosses as he was so intent on defence.

The absolutely huge and massive criticism (deserved) for England's that's the way we play approach, as they were skittling along at a rate of knots but losing wickets too, has hit home. It's as if the attacking shots have been put away as the recommended 'proper' test batting mindset taken on board and your wicket guarded with your life.

Its perhaps gone too far but its the way all the pundits were saying test batting should be.

It's just the match situation. There isn't much time left so he needs to be more aggressive than normally you'd like in test cricket.

And how did he do last time in Sri Lanka ? - they're picking him for SL not anywhere else.

He played alright, but going horses for courses with a young team isn't really the greatest move, lets be honest.

He's not going to be playing in the next Ashes series or have a real impact moving forward so why should we be sacrificing a chance for Sibley/Crawley/the likes to face challenges they haven't in County games?

But its not really as England play a huge amount of test matches, far more than any other country by a million miles, missing a few tests in SL where its like a sauna won't make any difference.

Picking horses for courses is sensible if a player is known to thrive in a particular environment against particular bowling.

Sibley has been brutally exposed on this tour but its very early in his career, he may go as well and if not it's hardly likely to matter too much as Jennings is only a specialist for SL and has the experience to help England on that tour.

It is going to matter, because chopping and changing a young team so early on is going to disrupt them – make them unsettle, likely performing worse as a result.

It is a backwards move.
