Current Affairs Cost of living…

10k is very reasonable for a semi detached house. That includes the new facade?
Yup. But not replacing / repositioning gutters etc. Wouldn't be too much extra, but it all costs.

Fella down the road had his done a few years ago part funded by a Govt grant (one prior to the last botched scheme). £7k total cost. Looks a good finish and he's happy with the warmth benefits. They're not huge houses, but the side elevation certainly adds to the cost.

Can anybody suggest a decent heater?

Home alone tonight and im freezing, but no choice to put the heating on to warm a whole house when im sitting in 1 room all night.............

Seriously, forget the heating. Wrap yourself in a blanket and you’ll be fine and it will cost you nothing. I know it sounds like Old people wrapped up, but it does actually work….

You know what. As bad as it sounds..an oodie is a godsend. Heating on for a few hours a day to keep the chill off the house, and an oodie on. Jobs actually a goodun. I haven't really noticed the cold, apart from thisorning when I forgot to put It on.
They are unbelievabley warm.
But I honestly hate saying that. It's not and never had been right, the fact that you have to ration heat. Especially in a so called rich country.

My dad uses a heated throw, says it keeps him all toasty. Costs hardly anything compared to heating up a house.

If you want consistent heat over a long period get yourself an oil filled radiator. Take about 25 minutes to warm up but stay warm for ages.

Do you know if they are expensive to run ? As I have a couple of these old heaters that I don't use, for obvious reasons. My 35 year old Daughter is back living with us, with my Grandaughter and Daushaund puppy, two pups ! She caught Pneumonia early December, after a 5 day stay in Hospital, she still isn't right, we moved her back into ours. Obviously the heating is on lots more, sod the bill and we have plenty of wraps, but we need the gas fire on now and then to keep the house warm.

Yet battery cost, manufacture and disposal, are prohibitive. Hydrogen fuel cell will negate the need for the batteries, the infrastructure will come whilst we are transitioning from ICE to Hydrogen, this is where battery electric will come to the fore. After that they will diminish, there will still be battery electrics I’m sure but the dominant power source in the relatively near future will be hydrogen

There is one important thing you are missing, and that is the energy efficiencies of powering a vehicle by hydrogen cell vs battery. Most figures given are that hydrogen fuel cells are around 2 to 3 times less efficient due to the energy losses incurred producing and transporting the hydrogen.

It should be the first piece of advice and go to, nevertheless if the temperature in a house really does drop significantly it is important to consider some heating.

Being in a room below 12°C for sustained periods of time can have medical implications, and more so for people with underlying health conditions.

It ain't as easy as saying, "Don't put the heating on, you'll be fine." Put layers first, but if that doesn't work, put the heating on and keep the layers on with it.

You don't have to set the thermostat for 21-22°C like some do; 18-19°C with layers and suitably insulated rooms should do the job

Not only that, but going under 14 gives moisture and mold a free reign.

I'm already at 5994 kWh (504 m3) of gas and it's not even january yet.
I'm dreaming of a green christmas... And a record warm new year (until spring)

Our smart meter isn’t playing ball at the moment, so I’ll have to do an online meter reading to measure our gas and electricity usage.

I suspect December and January will surge our usage and, alas, the monthly bill, but February onwards should average it out to something acceptable.

My wife keeps having the tumble dryer on, which is devouring electricity, but then again clothes need to dry and it means the gas is used less.

Try a dehumidifier mate. We use one to dry clothes in an unheated single room very effectively. Much more cost friendly than a tumble dryer and preserves the life of your clothes! Takes a fair bit longer though mind.
