Correcting spelling/grammar on the Internet

It has long been something that annoys me greatly watching this endlessly occurring on countless threads.

If it was out of a personal quest to help others I might be more amenable but it is almost without exception used to break rhythm in discussion and to demean someone's argument by passively aggressively belittling then.

If you were at a dinner party and someone continously kept correcting everyones conversational grammar then you would quite rightly think them to be a loathsome social cripple who should be cast into the gutter without pudding.

Anyone who is engaged in this practice should be treated with extreme suspicion and has undoubtedly, if male, never put their willy in a woman.
I would never attend a dinner party where any of the guests had problems with conversational grammar. Pah!

But as I asked before, who sets the rules and standards for what is acceptable?

It's all a bit elitist for me.

I'm thinking of a relaxed informal social setting, not a job interview or such where standards are quite rightly required.

Language is about communicating and if you are understood then you are achieving the functional goal.

Sounds like you're setting them then, doesn't it? Other people's criteria may vary.

I live in a country where tutting is a cultural norm. I can fully understand that in the UK that would put people's heckles up, and have advised accordingly. Personally I don't give a monkey's.

I was joking. I don't know tbh. Never really encountered it. Guess it depends how the correction is delivered

Very reasonable for me and you. Others may be irked by it though. When hou ask who sets the standards, I think we all have our criteria.

Very true.

And everyone on here has individual criteria, standards, knowledge, motivation, inebriation and countless other variables on how they post.

My original motive was just to highlight that pointing out people's spelling and grammar mistakes in discussions to belittle/bait them or to try to win arguments is poor form and I personally dislike it and would like to see a lot less of it on the forum.

I was interested to see if it was just me or if others felt the same.

I do agree with @chrismpw and others who do it with positive comedic intentions obviously, those motives should never be stifled.

All reasonable stuff. I've no real point to make, had one or too libations to many ferra Sundy and was a bit bored.

Have a cracking week ;)

Edit: and yes, never miss an opportunity for comedic ridicule.

No explanation necessary I like the occasional semi-serious chat while I wait for the viagra to kick in, enjoyed the discussion!

Have a great week too mate :)
