Not sure what the tories are doing here.

Restrictions are coming either this side of Xmas or shortly after.

At least labour accept the situation for what it is.

Oh by the way I assume all these libertarian anti lockdowners posting here are going to be voting Tory because they are the only party that even vaguely support their views.

Under labour we’d be in a lockdown already.

I was at Sheffield doing music tech but the studios were on the A61 and closer to wakey. I was at manygates which were one of the Bretton hall residences and so all my mates were actors and musicians studying at bretton/Leeds

It was across the road from the foresters pub.

I think it’s all gone now though. Keep meaning to drive up and have a look.
ah yep, so I live just up the road from Manygates Park mate, in Sandal. Small world!

Yep the Arts school is all gone, shame.

The ministers are demanding that we wait for more data on the severity of Omicron before locking down the country again

Again though, I would suggest that isn't so much to do with pay but rather either too much being asked of people or insufficient tools and support provided to allow what is being asked to be achieved. I suspect most staff have a reasonable idea of what "good" looks like, and their motivation will be on being able to deliver as close to that as possible.
yeah that's what I meant by support mate

Had an instructive morning reading the Tory Press mouthpieces and looking at the anti-sage and anti-restriction narratives. The Daily Mail have rolled out a 'Professor' to argue his model is right and Sage are wrong.

Closer inspection reveals his back ground is in engineering risks and he's actually a 'visiting Professor' (an honorary post essentially) at Bristol Uni but doesn't look to have an actual real academic post. It's a bit like asking me to comment on, well, anything much. With a healthy dose of irony, continue I will...

The other line appears to be going after Sage for not modelling the effects of mild disease severity. The Spectator, Telegraph and latterly the Mail are pursuing this one. Whilst acknowledging that this is because Sage have been asked to look at graded severity of several situations (I.e. scenario planning) the focus remains on Sage as being the key decision makers. They're not- that's the government supported by the civil service. It's also the Govt and media who release and/or focus on the worst case scenario figures. All whilst proclaiming Sage use or produce dodgy data or science.Sure there are limitations on the data, but you work with what you have and factor that in.

For me that's really worrying. It's painting the very well qualified modellers / the science as being untrustworthy.

It isn't and they aren't - what I assume the government look to be doing is waiting for real world data to come in to map a trajectory against the modelled scenarios. A bit like a game of chicken. In the meantime we all get to stew a tad longer.

A high stakes game of holding one's nerve. Get it right and we get a relatively restriction free life and probable praise given so many folk are steaming mad at the prospectof a lockdown. It would indeed be nice. Get it wrong and you'll have those urging caution throwing mud and folk will still be steaming mad at another lockdown. Oh, you may see some human suffering too.

That's why I'm glad I'm not in charge of anything. Speaking as someone who struggles to remember to tie his shoe laces.

My wife works in our regional hospital, she’s working night shift tonight and she is one of only 3 HCA’s on shift, where usually they have at least 7. This is to cover a whole ward (5 x 6 bed bays (2 of which are high dependency / enhanced care), plus a few side rooms). She is also a recent starter and is meant to still be on supernumerary shifts so she shouldn’t actually be counted in the staff numbers until the new year.

Staff shortages almost exclusively due to Covid related issues. For example her colleague tested positive a couple of weeks ago, isolated for 10 days, and on the day she was due to return to work, her husband tested positive, now she has to isolate for ANOTHER 10 days. It’s absolutely crazy.

Bank staff all turning down shifts as they don’t want to risk catching Covid and having to isolate over Xmas (fair enough, that’s a benefit of being bank I guess).
absolutely ridiculous mate, especially the example you use

They need to get a handle on it.

Yeah great - business in total paralysis because the govt doesn’t have balls to step in one direction or the other.

But I’m sure if a general election was called tomorrow you’d have no problem voting for them.

Testing in the UK is remarkably easy/cheap compared with the US. I’m not even a citizen here, but I just filled out a quick online form and the Royal Mail had a 7-pack of at home tests on my doorstep the following day with no charge and no questions asked.

Yeah, I managed to get a free one from work, but all the local pharmacies are sold out so I don't't even have the privilege of buying one for $30.

Looking at the South Africa data - Seems like the case numbers are coming down reassuringly, but the deaths figure has gone up (as can be expected with so many new cases)

Cases dropped from 37,875 on the 12th Dec to 15,465 on the 19th
Deaths rose from 21 to 105

You what?? Bizarre train of thought. This government and their advisers and media shills have been pushing lockdowns non-stop. If you’re pro-lockdown, then they are your party. Own them.
