They keep saying the South African population is younger, so it’s hard to know how the variant will affect our older population.

But there still must be a fair number of older people with Omicron in S.Africa - do the modelling on them. I suspect they aren’t dying in any great numbers.

I didn't realise you could catch obesity from someone else.
Not really about that.

The whole point of this is to take extra strain off the NHS. Well, if we had a healthier society in general, the NHS would be under less pressure.

That's a fair and valid point. It's also a fair and valid point to say people should get vaccinated, absolutely. It's also a fair and valid point to say people have the right not to be, like people have a right to shove 35 Maccies down their necks a week. Those people have to live with the consequences of their decisions and they both could adversely impact others. So why segregate one set and not the other?

Unless it's an obese anti-vaxxer. That's like the big boss.

Precisely. You've literally had the Dr who discovered the variant going "you can trust us"

I really think this younger population thing is being overplayed. Yeah, SA have a younger population. However, the UK doesn't have millions of people living in friggin townships

TBF I've never heard an obese person claim that eating salad puts a microchip in your head, or that salad is all part of the cabals plot to enslave us all.

What’s that got to do with anything though? Who’s actually seriously claiming that the vaccine does that?

Do you agree with segregating sections of society on medical grounds to protect the NHS?

That’s not at all what he’s saying is it? He’s saying unvaccinated people are taking up hospital beds and putting strain on the NHS, well so are obese people.

That they are and it's entirely preventable in the majority of cases.

Obesity -> type 2 diabetes -> complications

People who have type 2 diabetes take up ~10% of NHS budget.

Being unvaccinated in the majority of cases is also completely preventable.

I know it is. People that are vulnerable and at risk of being hospitalised should 100% be vaccinated. It’s irresponsible if they aren’t.

People that are not old, vulnerable or at risk of being hospitalised with covid, shouldn’t be segregated from society if they’re not vaccinated. That’s my position, I don’t think that’s controversial in any way.

See the thing is mate this is true yet why are SAGE and other advisors seemingly advising governments based on it not being less severe?

Based on the evidence of the severity Omicron in other countries so far, which is all there is to go off right now (that'll change very shortly I know), then you have to wonder where they are getting these possible figures from.

I'm not saying they're wrong, it'd just be nice to know how they are working out the severity of it. Is it just guesswork? Is it based on the data from SA being wrong?

Clear information would certainly certainly help wouldn't it mate. It would stop a lot of the fear and help everyone understand a little more the things (such as lockdowns) we need to do and why.

There's so many grey areas and that only feeds mistrust which is no good for anyone currently.

Failure of governments to lead in a calm and unified front certainly hasn't helped anyone.

Awesome nice one. Would take away a LOT of anxiety about the future for me. More reasons (recent family medical history related) than I'd want to go into here
I respect your privacy, GOT is often not the ideal place for airing medical history lol

I’m keep an eye out when browsing and let you know if see any updates, especially UK related. Stay well x

I've just assumed SA must be like bloody Neverland MACCA the way they've gone on about them being such a young population

You must be told your an old miserable git once you hit 35 over there.

They aren't even trying to hide the fact that they are having us off imigine saying this... Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Dr Angelique Coetzee said: "In South Africa, it's a mild disease and in the rest of the world, it's a severe disease".

Those daft SA doctors telling us that it's milder, not towing the line them, they need disappearing like Chinese doctors who don't say what they are told.

I just don't agree that's right tbh. This spread of Omicron can't be blamed on the unvaxxed. It's just a new variant that has mutated and spreads really quickly.

If restrictions are brought in, which they will be, it's because the government(s) around the world are panicking based on the modeling. And we should have a right to know what that modeling is. Based on all of the available data, Omicron is milder. So we need to know if the modeling is based on that, or if it is based on it being more severe and, if so, why is that the case.
Technically, given the govt line is to get boosters on the assumption that they will reduce significant morbidity and / or mortality from Omicron, anyone without a booster is at fault. Which is problematic as we only launched a mass rush vaccination drive last week.

Just scapegoating. The bigger picture point is overall NHS capacity has reduced consistently this last 20 years or so. The NHS being at risk pf collapsing ain't just due to covid. Sure, it's had a serious deleterious effect, but if there's no headroom any crisis will cause problems.
