While new cases are getting reported daily regardless of the numbers then there will always be a threat of restrictions.
Life as we know it has gone forever and no amount of vaccinations will get that back sadly.

As has been oft said, there are alternatives to just relying on vaccines that we should (must, really) try - alternatives that will give more normality and avoid a lot of the damage that all of us fear. Reducing this to a binary decision between "what we have now" and "do nothing" ends up with an entirely false choice.

You would hope protests would start but people are genuinely being terrified by the media into a state of adherence.

Apparently they're suggesting you do need three doses to be protected even if you've only just had your second dose. I'm not really sure how that works.

The problem now is they've tied themselves up in knots. My nan got her "booster" ( we all know in reality it's the third dose) about a month ago. Now she's in a flat spin. I understand why they don't want to diminish the effects of the vaccines because anyone with half a brain can tell we'd been in a far worse position without them. The issue though is that anyone with half a brain can also tell that they aren't as effective as we need them to be- and whether that's due to their design or because of the variants/the nature of this virus is up for debate.

So whilst we get light touch initial stories along the lines of "the vaccine is still amazing but a little top up never hurt anybody", these have now given way to "two doses no longer enough to be considered fully vaccinated and protection diminishes massively over time and against new variants". No wonder people are fed up.

What I don't get is if a 30 year old man had his second dose in November he should surely be alright considering barely anyone is getting seriously ill in South Africa and if they are they're unvaccinated and/or old. The messaging is definitely very odd.

If I’m reading the UKHSA data tanle right that scenario would still put that person as 88 % vaccine efficiency vs infection and presumably higher for serious effects (am assuming this is a 2nd dose of Pfizer given the 30 year age)

Obviously small sample size as yet so things could well change in that table as get more data.

"For Omicron, essentially no protective effect of 2 AZ doses" was probably enough to spook them utterly by itself tbh
