This government especially is especially unhealthy in that way - prominent RW hacks are very close friends (Wickham, Nelson, Stratton), or exes (Vine, Cole) or even partners (Wakefield) of the people making the decisions.
They should be disbarred from ever reporting on the people who they are hopelessly compromised on.
Yeah, I think journalists will always want to maintain cordial relationships with the sources of stories, whether they agree or disagree with that source ideologically, as if they scupper that professional relationship, they get left out in the cold, and are then pretty useless.
But agree, where there’s personal or financial relationships, this is where conflicts of interest can become very problematic.
