Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Agreed. The only people who seem to actually want more restrictions are boomers and middle aged wealthy white women (and their pathetic low testosterone husbands).
In case you have not noticed restrictions have been steadily increasing from mask wearing to travel being more restricted by the week since Omicron arrival.

These policies were sold as insignificant weeks-long interventions to reacquire control of virus replication. It will soon be 2 years. No idea why (or how) anyone is feeling anything other than pure resentment at most institutions/officials/media across the world right now who keep trying to push this pantomime forward, all with their own obvious vested interests but under the evidently fake (and cringe) guise of 'public health'.

These cretins have no idea the damage they’re doing. Or maybe they do.

“evidently fake”?

We have seen approaching 200,000 British citizens die from this disease. Hundreds of thousands more have spent time gasping for breath in hospitals with it. Millions more have actually had it, and felt what it was like.

This idiocy of trying to pretend this isn’t something that actually exists and isn’t a threat to us is such a worrying trend for our society. What more evidence do you need?

I agree the government have royally messed this up, especially with the self defeating nature of these restrictions, but the answer is sane policies rather than insanity.

This news has only been released to fend off the momentum for wider internal restrictions. Which the majority of the public have consistently wanted stricter measures. And certainly there was a push on reducing partying once Omicron was in the Uk. But probably gets them through Christmas, then it's traditional tough time for NHS until March...

I don't know one person thinks that. The only place I see people who think that is on twitter.

Anyone still wanting tough restrictions at this point baffles me

If people think there should be more restrictions then they are free to stay indoors and make their own choices. The rest of us want to get on with our lives and have accepted there will be a risk of this virus for the rest of our lives.

That's the problem with this country these days. Absolutely no initiative and everything thinks others should tell them what to do.

er - there was a wave of Christmas parties being cancelled over the past few days:

Let's be honest, businesses may have cancelled their "official" christmas parties, but parties are still taking place, and probably more than usual years. In fact, I'm going to 3 or 4 smaller events instead of the normal big one. People are still going to have fun and can organise it themselves.

The push for further restrictions for a variant there is not yet evidence gives serious illness, is pretty ridiculous to be honest. This virus is never going away. If people think there should be a lockdown this year then they will think there should be a lockdown every year. That's what this is about - the attempt at normalising winter restrictions as some kind of moral duty. It cannot be allowed to happen, especially since the vaccines are working.

I said it at the time but part of the problem , if not the government's lack of following their own rules, is what people choose to take as gospel.

Boris says stay in, everyone stays in for their safety. Boris says go out , people suddenly decide what he is saying is silly and we shouldn't be doing that. Which ties into your post about people making their own minds up, or the lack of when it suits them

So this current mask policy , because Boris said it people happy to explain away why it's a great idea (despite it going against the infection data for the past couple of months) but if he came out today and said mandatory masks are now over again, people would question it. Even though there is , and never has been , anything stopping them wearing them to begin with.

This is just chanting the same mantra over and over again and calling it “evidence”.

Doing what we are doing now is killing 700-1000 people a week, and hospitalising many more.

The vaccines are working to keep those numbers lower than they would be otherwise (if they didn’t exist), but they are not returning us to normal; indeed what the government are doing is hardwiring us into a society where (as a minimum) boosters are going to be required for everyone for the foreseeable future without ever ruling out the possibility that further restrictions won’t be needed (in the event something like this happens).

There’s also the continual stress being placed on healthcare systems, businesses and society caused by this, and the death rate.

None of these things are worth the cost we will have to pay for them - we won’t be any better protected now, never mind for the next one. There are much better ways of getting back to a much greater version of normality.
