Still not seen anything that says this variant is more serious, just that it spreads more. If it doesn't lead to more serious illness then its not a big problem.

We cant keep being driven by case numbers.
The missus and I laughing at BBC news big headline story last night.........”a 3rd case has been detected in the UK”
3 cases? They’re scaring the population to death.

They've just done another BREAKING NEWS flash. Apparently they've found a few cases in Scotland. There are probably over 1000 cases in the UK so I don't really see how it's breaking news.

So how the hell has it turned up in Scotland? Has someone arrived there from SA or elsewhere? Or do these variants just materialise out of thin air?

It probably arrived a week / a couple of weeks ago, and because we’ve still not got a comprehensive surveillance system for these sorts of things we probably didn’t even know it was here.
Maybe it spreading in the community already without things going really bad could indicate its not that big a deal? It could've been here for a while. Either way I'd expect harsher restrictions than what was announced Saturday until they find out. I'm guessing Scotland will jump first, and that we'll tighten the rules in England some time this week as more and more are found

It’s not had that long here (and not much in SA tbf) to determine whether it is a big deal - but that’s not really the point. If it was a big deal, would we have picked it up in time, never mind contained / stopped it?

The answer appears to be a fairly clear no, and that’s what should scare people.

Definitely. Even say 20 people on every South Africa flight are positive over the past 7 days. You're probably talking at least 3/4 flights from there to the UK per day. That's over 500 people. If they pass it on to even 1 or 2 each you're already in the thousands.

Maybe they can get flight logs and test all South African arrivals from the past few weeks.
