France and Germany are currently testing 20% of what we do on a daily basis.

So this idea that France is doing better than us based on positive tests is stupid

Was anyone making that argument then, I said they’ve had less cases, hospitalisations and deaths for months.

Also FWIW it was (until recently) much easier and cheaper to get tested in France than it is here. No symptoms PCR tests were available free (for French citizens and residents, not tourists sadly although it was cheaper than it is here).

I did, I said it was more down to the weather. Europe has longer better summers.

It looks like Europe are going to admit defeat and constantly live in lockdowns and restrictions. Because I can't see how next winter will be any different for them

If you say so Amin.
Let's leave it at that.

Wakefield Council is labour.... they don't have a clue about what a tory government are planning.
Those posters/the campaign look very official- I'd guess more that all councils have them but have been told not to give them out til an announcement is imminent. Whether it's an accidental or deliberate action who knows
So when (for example) South Korea has had much lower numbers of deaths, infections and hospitalisations, less economic damage and fewer days under national lockdown they’ve not actually been effective.
At the start yes, but that ship sailed a long time ago. From where we are now what you want essentially means a military style lockdown for a few months, full furlough, nobody leaving their houses at all even for supermarkets. ( it'd need to be done quickly, not drawn out like previous "lockdowns")

Then permanent restrictions on gatherings and socialising, no travel in and out of the country ever for any purpose, otherwise it'd just grow again from a low base and we'd have to do it all again

It's not ebola

Possibly the posters are from last winter and are just giving them out just incase.

How the gov can justify those measures when they told us cases could hit 100,000 a day bit haven't come anywhere close is beyond me

they aren't from last winter, they're different signs and it's a different slogan - that bloke is my dad's mate

I'm not sure 100% if it means they're just preparing for the worst or preparing because they know it's going to happen, just thought them worth sharing

Such lockdowns shouldn’t be required once it is down at a low level, but of course whilst we are letting this thing run round effectively unchecked we are not going to get down to that low level anytime soon.

Well the most obvious answer is

Wakefield Council have done them, because they are red = Labour and they say Wakefield Council on them.

If they were from the gov all councils would have them and it would be all over the national press

Yeah, and Wakey Council are one of the worst. Not because they're Labour, just run shambolically.

There'd be no surprise if the government flip flops though, let's face it.

Wasn't the action in Germany due to low vaccine uptake in several states?
The clampdown in Netherlands due to previous lax attitude.

In France double a small number and you still have a relatively small result. Increases here due to the mass movements of people over the toussaint holiday period.
Whatever is your agenda, mask wearing does reduce the spread of respitory vitus infections.

I personally think masking is moderately effective at reducing cases and is worthwhile doing when there are surges in cases as even a 5% reduction in cases can make a large difference when you are dealing with exponential growth.

However it is no substitute for vaccination and Germany hasn’t had particularly large waves in the past iirc so limited natural immunity is probably a factor too. Anti vaxers are often anti mask as well.

Digging into the Germany cases a bit more and if this is true (@Billy Dean any info?) seems it is a bit aimilar to recent UK wave of cases in kids in school where masks are optional and low vaccination rate.

Unlike the UK waning immunity in the vaccinated elderly, and thus hospitalizations/deaths, should hopefully be less of a issue as vaccinations are more recent
