Do people honestly think masks and vaccine only passports for big events (government leak - 2-13% of all community spread) are really going to do enough to save Christmas, if it is already in doubt?

How is Christmas in real doubt? Numbers have been consistent for months with no massive rises. Deaths at worst are likely to be somewhere around 300 per day. I just can't see a lockdown happening based on the data available.
Cautionary good news. If linked article is correct, use of the drug is not without risk. Both to the patient and of virus mutations. Which sounds a bit like anti-biotic resistance which generally arises if the full course of treatment isn't followed. Which is of concern if it's to be handed out like smarties outside of hospital supervision...
"my biggest concern with this drug is much larger than the health of any one person, it is molnupiravir’s ability to introduce mutations to the virus itself that are significant enough to change how the virus functions, but not so powerful as to stop it from replicating and becoming the next dominant variant."
As much as people are justifiably excited about the prospect for orally available drugs that can prevent and treat Covid-19, I believe the FDA needs to tread very carefully with molnupiravir, the antiviral currently before them for approval.

Deaths' from other illnesses are increasing now and are higher now than they have for some years. Immense pressure on the NHS already, people will be left to die without the dignity that modern medicine can offer. Simply because NHS staff are being overwhelmed.

So this is an interesting thing I've learned about recently (and experienced myself). We know that loss of smell (and taste) is a symptom of Covid. There are lots of ideas on what's happening here, but it seems that there is significant damage to endothelial cells in the nose and when these "grow back" they must be reconnected to the right brain pathways. Some people have continuing loss of smell (anosmia), some people smell phantom smells (phantosmia), and some have partial smell but smell very strong smells frequently (parosmia).
The last one is me--I had covid in late June and I was fine with it (glad for the vaccine) but about 1 month ago I started having very strong sewage smells everywhere. Frequently this smell comes up when there is a real similar smell (the bathroom at work is a significant trigger) but even on muggy mornings it smells like this outside my house. It was worst when I was traveling recently for work and the entire hotel smelled like this (although a coworker suggested that the hotel did in fact smell). I had something similar happen years ago when I was sick with a cold-like illness and everything smelled like vinegar for a week afterwards (I think triggered by eating fries and ketchup), and I think this will go away but there is a lot of literature about "re-training" the nose/brain to smell correctly.
So I'll plan to do some of the self treatments described here; and I'm very glad that coffee only smells like coffee and not sewage. That would be a serious problem for me.
