Due to fly to the Caribbean next Monday. Taking my little girl on her first holiday. Not feeling particularly enthusiastic about air travel atm. Not because I think we'll get the virus per se, but more because one suspected case on your complex and bang, you're in your room for two weeks with potential delays.

Just gonna have to keep an eye on this over the next few days. If it was just me and the wife I'd be less arsed, but as other parents will know, the baby adds a new dynamic.
Ambitious first holiday with a baby that mate.
Hope it goes well for you.

Yeah, when I flew back with my boy from England to China just recently, what is always a pretty horrible flight at the best of times, was made much worse by the virus and the general atmosphere on the plane, and even at the airport in France.

I was travelling to China, so all the face masks (we were basically the only people without them) made things tenser, but as you say I wasn't really worried for myself, but my boy who is three years old. You just can't teach them hygiene at that age! Their hands are always in their mouths, as well as many other objects (my kid was even licking the chairs in the airport lounge at one point), and all the delays, and sleep deprivation really added to my stress levels. Back then as well it was a really more mysterious virus, and I wasn't aware as I am now, that it doesn't seem to be affecting children.

A week after we got back my kid suddenly vomited all over me and came down with a mysterious fever. As we had been in quarantine all that time, I really did start to think, how it was even possible, and that he may even have this bloody thing! Silly but I actually prayed for him at one point, and I can't say I'm a religious (although we all are in those circumstances) person!

Anyway he recovered, and then a few days later, I also came down with a fever, and a throat infection for like 4 days. It was the kind of illness that under any other circumstances I would have shrugged off, but quarantined within a house, you start questioning your every decision. Am I just infecting my own family? Should I go to hospital? Hospital? Would that not be worse? What if I this fever doesn't end, and I need antibiotics etc?

Saying all that though, it's nothing compared to what people will have had to endure on the diamond Princess, or quarantined within hotels etc. God bless the computer/internet!

Anyway I think you'll be fine mate. After one month of quarantine I've started to think that even if I get this bloody thing, it's preferable to living in fear and paranoia, like an OCD germophobe for the rest of my life!

But...best talk it over with the missus...

Sounds like a tough experience mate, are you under lockdown now? How is it over there?

And yeah, spoken to her. She's adamant that we shouldn't cancel unless we're told not to travel and she's probably right. I was actually talking to @GrandOldTeam about it earlier and the risk is still pretty tiny so we shouldn't overreact. Gonna see how it things play out this week.

I agree the risk is tiny. That said, with an infant in tow, I would double check any travel insurance you have. Even if its a package deal. Y'know, just in case.

Wasn't so bad really. Mainly just paranoia and boredom. Although I wouldn't wish being cooped up with my missus for a month straight on anyone haha!

But seriously, these days we're not used to these things!
I've been reading a lot of books recently about viruses and diseases back in the 'old days' such as small pox, and polio and that really puts things into perspective. Let's hope something like those won't reappear any time soon.

The lockdown has been lifted somewhat today, and I think we can now go out again whenever we like. A lot of business seem to be opening back up too.

Gotta wonder if it won't now creep back in again, but you can't keep people locked down forever as it gets to a point where the cure will become more dangerous than the illness, as people need to work and put food on the table.

This is a really insightful article by two virologists. Basically, we are past the point of containment and attention now needs to be directed at educating the public on how to deal what what's coming.

does this suggest it's probably far more widespread than we realise?
Not a healthcare professional but from my reading of those that are it depends on location probably.

Doubt it is in S Korea, they are doing aggressive tracking and follow up testing of people’s likely contact lists - they are even sending texts to people’s phones of “patient x was in your local grocery store between 9-10 am“ etc so the people who think they may have been exposed can get their (free) tests.

UK has been doing quite a lot of testing too, iirc something like 9000 and not just those who have travelled to affected areas.

However US had as of Thursday done less than 500 tests :( The spike in cases over past 24 hours is probably related to more testing finally being done.

On top of that mate. Be honest, I am being a hypochondriac for even thinking about this? (Opem question to all).
