Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Will be interesting to see the reaction in the UK if masks are brought back (I think this will happen before October). People have got so used to not wearing them that I'd imagine compliance will be poor even if there is a push.

“It would be a big mistake to infer from our paper that masks can only prevent 10% of infections,” says Abaluck. “We think what the results show is that masks are an incredibly powerful tool to reduce symptomatic COVID infections and particularly to reduce symptomatic COVID infections in the people who are most vulnerable to death or very serious illness.”

Had my second jab yesterday so that's me sorted. No side effects as yet, didn't get any from the first one but hear they can take a few days. Hopefully we see a brighter winter this year with a large majority now fully vaxxed.
I'd love to think you're right but I very much doubt it. I think anything fun will be shut down by December, and social distancing back in hospitality before then, if it manages to stay open at all

There's no chance we get through this winter close to normally without destroying the NHS, and that has been clear for months. Its obviously open for debate who's fault that is - I feel it'll be blamed on the unvaccinated, but is likely to be more down to the underfunding and lowering of capacity over the last few years as it wont be just covid causing that problem but flu as well.

What Scotland does will be the barometer, as Krankie always like to get in there before the English.

If Scotland jumps, invariably we`ll jump too.

The reality is, that no one knows what will happen. Look at the screaming headlines during he weeks leading up to opening up again in July. Predictions of 100 000 cases a day and 1000 deaths per day, which was apparently nailed on and we`d all locked down again by the end of the Summer.

Ramping up in deaths.

Think you mean England, mask wearing is still a thing Cymru as well as other parts of the Kingdom.

Too many knob heads coming into Wales this last weekend thinking England is just the UK.

That figure isn't surprising though due to the bank holiday.

Yes england is starting to look like the southern states in USA. I put a mask on today to quickly go into a shop to buy lunch. Quite busy as its in an office area and it was just after 12. I was one of 2 in around 25 people with a mask on. Its going to be hard to change the mindsets.

You must mix in different groups to me as I can't say I've changed much. All of the places I go to still request you wear masks, such as markets, shops, public transport, so I do. Maybe people have got used to not giving a crap about others?

Places here do request it. I think it massively varies depending on areas. South Liverpool has generally been pretty bad for masks since July.

I assume it was even worse today because nobody wears masks in offices so when they go the shop for lunch they don't put one on.

Been down in Devon and Surrey 600 miles round trip back to Wales various stops week before last for a week, mask wearing in England is virtually non existent in these areas from shops to service stations. Can tell as well signs all over Devon asking people not use local health services, if unwell go home and contact your local health service. Same attitude came in from midlands at the weekend.

Working as I do in a CMHT, with many double vaccinated colleagues now off sick with covid symptoms (and who have tested positive). Being double vaccinated doesn't stop you catching the virus and developing some quite nasty symptoms - even if you don't end up in hospital you are still infectious for a few days at least. Yes, fewer days (for most of us) than if you weren't vaccinated but enough days to infect others you have been in contact with. Masks are a must.

I was pleasantly surprised how amenable people in the local area were to the reimposition of an indoor mask mandate after our cases locally began to rise significantly.

We’d had about a month or two without the mandate and mask wearing, at least in shops, was still pretty high but since the mandate came back it is only the odd person who you don’t see wearing them at the supermarket etc.
