Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Just been reading a thread on what I assume is the same outbreak.

Hadn’t realised it had such a knock on effect (thankfully temporarily) on the medical staffing.

I'm in Queensland we have been kept up to date all about this. We are back out of lockdown but they have still not allowing community sport for the next 2 weeks because of that outbreak. Although professional sport is allowed to continue as all the Rugby League teams are in the state trying to finish their season. Looks like we have got on top of that outbreak though which is good.

I did hear on the radio there was quite a few medical staff isolating due to contact tracing and then there was something concerning about a group of heart surgeons that were all isolating and had to get one out so he could perform emergency surgery.

Am I the only one who's almost forgotten this thing exists anymore?

Still take precautions etc but couldn't tell you how many deaths/infections/vaccine numbers etc are going on pretty much zoned out from it all now thankfully lol

UK starting booster roll out for over 50s in a few weeks.

That said, its proper odd these last few weeks. We pretty much reopened what, 8 weeks ago, ish? Euros, Wimbledon, F1, no real issues. Cases falling from a not too bad peek, and admissions/deaths never really got any traction.

Winter will be the kicker, one way or another mind.

Delta is just like a 3-day bug in how it acts mate. I think we're seeing that everywhere. It gets hold in the population, and spreads like wildfire - it's why so many vaccinated or half vaxxed have got it too.

Fortunately, it happens quickly and fizzles out quickly it seems.

Any more info on how the 17year old student caught it from the international case who as I understood it was in quarantine?

just gotta be sensible I suppose

My life is just as it has been for the last 3 months, but that's cause I work full on doing odd hours and stuff, and i was never bothered about going out on the town every few days anyway.

I guess it'll hit me (I hope!) that we're back to normality - or what that means now - when the gigs I'm meant to be going to happen. They're set for the end of Oct/start of November though, so we'll see.

It's the healthy approach, honestly. Just spend a minute every few days checking the trend line, now that you know what Delta is, and it'll remind you to take the precautions and do smart things like stock up before this all goes fully sideways.
20 cases in a Brisbane school of 2400 gives you...
3 Day Lockdown! Which starts in 5.5 hrs 4pm Sat. local time.
Off out to buy some beer
There was a great article in the New York Times five or ten years back where a hurricane was going to land somewhere on the Eastern Seaboard, and the reporter pointed out that Walmart has learned that their stores sell out of Pop-Tarts and beer under those conditions. Walmart now knows to send trucks full of Pop-Tarts and beer down to areas where a hurricane is about to make landfall.

People buy the Pop-Tarts because they can eat them with no power, and they buy the beer because there's a hurricane coming. Buying beer sounds pretty rational to me, under the circumstances.

People are still dying from it though..

right, I wasn't denying that or looking to take away the serious of it - for @tsubaki too who has liked this. That wasn't my point. It's deadly serious, I know having had it and my dad and sister are still recovering too.

So in no way am I trying to take away from the serious of it.

What I am saying is it spreads and seems to fizzle out quickly, like how a standard bug that goes round would. But, I also reckon it'll come back and sweep through the population again, and then probably will do again. That's where it matters about controlling it and managing it - ideally first off through boosters which are starting very soon in the UK for the vulnerable groups - to ensure that the NHS isn't overwhelmed.

Went to something called The Travelling Feast last Friday. It's a sort of Food meets Music open air event and there's a series of 6 being held across Cornwall over the next couple of weeks. You don't really get much opportunity to see half decent music acts down here as there aren't any venues big enough to stage them, so this has proven very popular with the natives, who are all gagging for a bit of normality.

The acts on last Friday were Toploader, The Feeling, Gabrielle and The Human League. You had to prove you'd been double jabbed (uploading the NHS app to your phone is dead easy my missus informs me) or have a recent negative lateral flow test, but once you were inside the event it was great to see thousands just being normal and enjoying themselves.

We're out and about this weekend too. It's Falmouth week and there's an open air stage on the waterfront overlooking the River Fal. Saturday night there's cover bands of Queen and Fleetwood Mac on which should be great. Believe me, this is normally as good as it get's down here. lol

The Human League were absolutely boss by the way. Like stepping back into the 80s. Phil Oakey hasn't lost any of his vocal tones (even if he does look like Uncle Fester now) and the girlies turned back time given they're both 58 now. If you're of that era and you get the chance go and see them, do it. Over the last few years I've seen a lot of the top 80s bands, Blondie, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, The Jam, Spandau Ballet. I'd say the Human league live were second only to New Order. Top top drawer. Or maybe I was just giddy at being out again. ;)
