Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Australia and NZ have withdrawn from the rugby league World Cup over here.

They are going to be hermits for years and years if they don't sort out their vaccine drives.

They have kept cases far lower than any other "Westernised" countries but will need to keep themselves isolated and in perpetual lockdowns.
The feeling in some quarters here in Australia is - Yes the vaccines roll out is a total dogs breakie, due to lack of vaccine supply.
But also...and states vary in this a bit, but not too much...they still seem to have a 'zero cases - or nothing' mind set.

Hospital cases in Victoria this week 4
Cases this week in ICU 1
Deaths this week...thankfully...0
Deaths last week...sadly 1...a lady aged 94 with other problems

This is 10 days into lockdown with at least another 10 to go.

100 infections a day is stopping it though. You can control and contain it at that level; you can’t at 50000 a day.
Should have insisted on the vaccine passports for July 19th along with continuing face masks. Instead of this typical laizissez faire attitude to personal responsibility, which thankfully was to put bed by 1am on 19th as reports started to come from various night clubs of young people doing what many of us did when we were young engage in risky behaviours.

I wouldn't really call them idiots. It's not surprising that people would turn to people they know over other option. i don't mean anti-vaxxers here, just people on the fence with it who already feel disconnected from society.

It can have a huge effect, just look at the brexit vote, a good amount of the public felt they weren't recognised by 'the elite', voted against them (in their eyes) and brexit won. these people ignored voting in any of the polls etc and now here we are.

Well yes, I mean I voted out (and got called an idiot) though I did it for slightly different reasons.

But Brexit, despite what some in the remain camp want you to believe, wasn't about life or death.

This really is. If people are telling others not to get the vaccine, then they're an idiot.

On work related business, I went to Whiston hospital's A&E department yesterday morning. The wait time to be seen was nine hours for some patients.

Yes, nine hours! While for the majority of the population, we might see the light at the end of the tunnel, but the NHS is still pretty darn stretched.
More and more people are being pushed down the experimental route for many cancers which should have been operated on and treated. Slow death sentence for some that should have had much better outcomes...

That’s not the same as what Johnson wants to implement. They’re allowing recent natural immunity and negative tests, not just solely double jabbed people.

The point of doing it is to get people to get the vaccine.

Are you against getting the vaccine?

I doubt it, but it's to encourage people who are on the fence to go and get the jab.

It's a crap thing to do but so is locking down every country

Such a senseless loss of life and health

Bizarrely, from a US point of view, republicans seem to be both insisting on crediting Trump with the development and initial procurement of the vaccine, and also disproportionately anti-vax due to a mistrust of the current administration.

Trump obviously didn’t help matters this week by putting out a statement giving cover to the vaccine hesitant, whereas he could have put out a statement saying ‘I’ve had the vaccine, I secured the supply, all go and get it’, which would really help the red states uptake rate.

Trump and his wife taking a smiling photo when they got their jabs in January would have gone a long way you would have though to nip this stupidity in the bud, especially for those who thought “I’ve already had Covid, don’t need to vaccinate”.

It bemuses me that is political, it should be humans vs Covid.
