even with everyone wearing masks won't make you super safe mate if you are not vaccinated, nobody will think of you in this cruel world, even with the masking mandate, loads would still not wear at some places, you gotta avoid busy places.

Nobody thinks wearing a mask makes you super safe. It makes you safer than not wearing one and wearing one while in the supermarket for example doesn't impinge on freedom to any notable degree. Nobody's life is ruined by wearing a mask in a shop. Medical exemptions not withstanding.

How do you propose people in the service sector deal with 'avoiding busy places' ?

Absolutely shed loads of people have been out drinking and eating while masks have been necessary in the past few weeks so I'm not sure where you're getting that from.

You're basically prioritising the desires of people not to wear masks over the desire of people who want people to be safer and wear masks while not drinking or eating. Doesn't make sense to me that you would rank them higher in importance.

I rank the economy and by proxy peoples' jobs as more important.

If there were "shedloads" going out, hospitality wouldn't be struggling - but it is. Nowhere near max capacity even with capacity limits. Loads aren't breaking even. It can't continue.

I have no proposition. It's a risky job even with the mandate. So if they do feel they are not safe and are vulnerable, they should consider quit and change job. It's a pandemic after all. Nobody kills nobody willingly.

I'm not going to get into a semantic argument about what constitutes shedloads, but you are prioritising people's desire to not wear a mask because they don't feel like it, over other people's physical wellbeing.

Nobody can convince me that telling people they don't need to wear a mask in places like shopping centres or supermarkets is a good idea.

We live in a society where we expect people to use common sense all the time - this is no different. People will still wear masks, they're just not being forced to by the government.

Yes, you will always get people who are arses, but that happened with the mandate regardless. The problem with a mandate is it's too blunt a tool - it has to be restrictive everywhere to avoid confusion. Taking it away means people and, importantly, businesses, can use their own judgement. Waterstones is still asking people to use masks, loads will - but some won't, and that's important.

We expect people to use common sense, and we also have laws which enforce certain behaviours on the population.

Seatbelts would not be anywhere near as commonly worn if it wasn't illegal to drive without one. The same will be the case with masks. If you remove the legislation people who don't want to wear one generally won't, to the detriment of the wellbeing of others.

Yes, but the difference is not wearing a seatbelt doesn't tank a whole sector of the economy. You can't just ignore that - it's a huge deal with thousands upon thousands of jobs resting on it.

The mask mandate made total sense pre-vaccination. It doesn't now. You have laws when on balance it makes sense to have those laws - it makes sense to wear a seatbelt, it prevents death, there's no downside beyond a tiny amount of personal inconvenience.

I had to stop at a motorway services the other day, some nobhead wasn't wearing a mask and when the guy in front of me questioned why he said "Nobody gives a f' now mate"

Sadly I don't have much faith in this population to think about others.
Fallacy of personal responsibility at that service station.

Mask wearing only really worked because the vast majority adhered to wearing one...

And of course mask wearing protect the other person more than mask wearer.

I would sooner people be able to get cancer screening done than people be able to go to a buffet without gloves on. Maybe i've got it the wrong way round.

At nightclubs or Wimbledon Centre Court, people can stay hours maskless; dance or clap all they want no probs, but 5 min visit to Asda or Carrefour, you forget your mask at home or drop it accidently on your way, then you pay a penalty while you are buying Lindt chocolate, not fair IMO.
