Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

There will be a lot of people planning to get their second (or first) vaccine doses in the next few weeks who are now having to take a major risk that they'll get Covid and therefore have to delay the dose.

I'm one of these people. Nobbers who think it's a massive hinderance to wear a mask in Tesco now mean i'll be at a higher risk of both getting covid and not being able to get my second vaccine as planned. Through no fault of my own.

But hey, FREEDOM.

You can catch COVID after vaccination. Because you're young, it's extremely likely it won't harm you much regardless. The people it does harm have by and large been fully vaccinated and the link between cases and hospitalisation has been severely weakened and the link between cases and deaths has all but been broken.

There has to be a line in the sand drawn at some point. If we don't do it now and let people mix and get 'normal' bugs and colds as well before the winter, we'd be in desperate trouble then and we'd have to delay re-opening until the Spring.

That would result in a mind boggling amount of job losses. The hospitality industry in particular would essentially die. It'd be the straw that broke the camels back. Because of furlough, we still haven't seen the consequences already from this, which will be huge.

We've been living in a bubble that's been getting bigger and bigger. It's best to pop that bubble sooner rather than later.

Lidl this morning was very good, with the overwhelming majority wearing a mask. Hopefully that is something we see throughout the country.

People shouldn't be demonized for not wearing a mask though. There could be loads of reasons why they won't.

The nutters who are actually against them are probably the ones who have been ignoring that rule all along, and there are plenty.

I will keep wearing my mask to the supermarket and places like that. I have to pop it on for 5-20 minutes, and it might help save a life. It's a small sacrifice to make that in no way impacts me, so it's absolutely fine.

As an aside, I went to Leeds on the train last night. At Wakefield's main station, they'd finally put the seats back, removed the social distancing stuff etc, though there were still people wearing masks.

There were quite a few that weren't (this was at 5pm when I was going). Now, it did strike me that every person who wasn't wearing a mask was BAME. And there was specifically one group of Asian lads who were together, and none of them had masks on.n Now obviously, there were people wearing masks who were BAME too, and I've seen plenty of white people not wearing masks. But it was noticeable yesterday, really noticeable. And then when you look at the vaccine uptake among BAME communities too... I don't know, it paints a grim picture.

The train, everyone had a mask on, so maybe they just couldn't be arsed putting them on in the station itself – albeit I didn't see the group of lads get on the train so I don't know about them.

I feel like a raging racist saying that now so I want to stress in no way am I making sweeping assertions. It was just something I noticed yesterday and it was very apparent to anyone who was there.

We'll be back enjoying our 1 hour of permitted exercise by the time Autumn comes back around

Hope all of the people that moaned about wearing a facemask and sticking to some very easy rules are happy with that

FFS, why are you so intent on being doom and gloom?

Based on our case rate, we should be having 1000s of deaths a day.

We aren't, and hospital stays are lower and shorter.

The vaccine roll out needs to get done and the boosters that are already being rolled out in some nations then need to be given in the autumn.

But for now, enjoy the fact that we have normality back again to an extent. It has F all to do with people sticking to the rules – the vast majority have done for 18 months. It's time for the rules to end.

If you want to keep wearing a mask, do so. I will be in most situations. I'm sure a lot will be too.

People die every day from lots of things that are not COVID. We've got to the point now where ultimately there's a trade off. They should stop counting the deaths daily and publishing them really, it's doing nobody any good. You don't know how many people die of cancer or car crashes or strokes per day do you.

So come on, just be sensible, don't be so intent on blaming other people and let's see how it goes. The vaccine uptake needs to pushed on – they'll end up doing that by introducing passports for it. There's no reason for people not to get it but ultimately you cannot physically force people to do so.

From today, Primark are giving us staff and customers the option of wearing masks and removing some not all rectrictions (no door counts, floor markings and one way systems) as well as reopening our fitting rooms for the first time in 16 months.

I personally will still wear one on the bus and in shops that require them but I may stop in work because the store is hideously hot in summer which makes it difficult to breath much less communicate as most staff now have to wear headsets all day

Because the world is a doomy and gloomy place?

I'm just erring on the pessimistic side because if things come crashing back down again i'm not sure i'm mentally strong enough to deal with that

I don't trust the government to get anything right - so ergo this opening up is going to fail

The 'vast majority' of people probably have been sticking to the rules - just like the 'vast majority' of people that think that the rules that were still in place yesterday were fine to carry on with - rather than pissing 18 months worth of caution up the wall

I will continue to wear a mask in shops and the post office etc just because l travel across the uk with work and think it's sensible. Im always in the post office and it's full of pensioners etc and to not wear one would feel callous (to me). I'm going to the post office later. I wonder if anyone will say anything?

not sure if I am being stupid here or I just don't understand things:

if you are double vaccinated; i thought you don't have to self isolate now? I know a few people who are double vax and are isolating.

this is the problem in itself really. I am fairly intelligent and on top of things yet i have no idea

I don't think it will get that bad, i can see it the restrictions going back to what they were like yesterday.

I don't think being double vaccinated has any impact on anything apart from arriving home from a foreign country

Changes in mid August mate. For now you still should isolate if you've been in contact with someone with covid.

If you test positive you'll still have to isolate after August though.

Cheers.

So, I have a wedding to go at the end of Aug which i'm really looking forward to so I have to semi isolate 10 days before for fear of getting pinged.

madness

When are they binning off the 'if you're in the same postcode as another individual you have to self-isolate' rule?

It doesn't matter if deaths and hospitalisations are at an all time low - Society won't be open because every employee will be locked inside their own homes!
