Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I've always struggled to understand the motive behind the government deliberately destroying their own economy, but with these variant scare stories I have to admit it seems more viable an idea than it once did.

I mean if we take them seriously, the original COVID strain at this point was barely transmissable at all.

All a bit strange. I don't really understand how it can get so much worse each variant.

Seen a story today that Imperial got their model completely wrong and over twice as many people have antibodies than they predicted.

Aye, all you had to do with the original version was sing happy birthday and wash your hands, and you were protected.

Are they scare stories though? The Delta variant is real. Thankfully we had the majority of the country vaccinated in time.

The conspiracy theorists would say that it`s all about taking control of certain sectors and " re setting " the global economy.

A kind of " communist light " society.

I must admit, when I read about the new " Double Delta variant " I laughed out loud.

I have just been speaking with a colleague who has had both vaccinations but caught what he assumes to be the Delta variant two weeks back - cold-like symptoms for a week.

I think something can be real and a scare story at the same time.

I think the government are terrified of the resultant enquiry after this and are using any and every excuse to cover their arse as we re-open.

Also, transmission is largely based on modelling, which has been proven to be very flawed. It's comparing apples and oranges - the original strain saw us lockdown almost totally like the Black Death was here, compared to now when everyone is basically ignoring it completely. So of course the groups that are unvaccinated will be spreading it quicker.

I find it personally extremely unlikely that this 'Delta' and 'Delta Plus' are as transmissable as they say compared to the original without losing its' lethality, as every virus mutation generally consists of a trade-off in that respect. But I don't know this, same as the experts don't know this, because it's all based on modelling and very obviously flawed assumptions.

I tested positive 4 days ago ive been doubled jabed .2 or 3 days sore throat headache last 3 days feel as rough as a dogs arse like a really bad cold.
Ive worked throughout and never caught it get double jabbed and catch it i know more people with now than ever.

I know some weird beards (green party affiliation), who are more than happy that air industry is on its knees. Was at the GP Monday, he reckoned we will not go fully back to pre covid normality, did not get to clarify as there as patient support.

The experts are able to approximate transmissibility better than anybody, but approximate is the word. It's the best we can do.
The statement in bold isn't true. This virus has plenty of time to spread before somebody would die of it, meaning it does not need to reduce mortality rate in order to transmit. The natural R number of Covid has plenty of room to grow without harming its kill potential.

Grouping ourselves with the experts as both 'not knowing' is very wrong. They have a very scientific method of best modelling; we have hunches and small sample sizes of anecdotal evidence.

Some of the Imperial models have been dubious. The models also cover such a large range of results that they're covering most situations.

Is it true this new delta variant has more symptoms similar to a bad cold? I've been run down (runny nose, scratchy throat) for a couple of days now but wasn't going to bother with a test as it's just a bit of man flu. Wondering if I should get a lateral flow test popped through the door now just in case?

For sure they can be very wrong, but I'd be very wary of thinking our own knowledge can trump or match theirs. The part we've so drastically failed at is the government's use of these models.

I dont get it either, here in Ireland there are 39 people with covid in hospital, 39 in a country of 5.5 million, we have more hospitals than hospitalised covid patients, yet the latest news is that they may delay further reopening due to the potential of the Indian variant. We were told at the start of all this that lockdowns were to help the health service get on top of things, it's madness now we still have no idea what the end game is is it zero covid which will never happen it's endemic now and will keep popping up, we need to move onto living with covid like the rest of the world rather than the current policy of hiding from covid.

That's right, though seems to be very underreported. Running nose and headaches are supposedly very common symptoms now. Always worth having a box of those lateral flow tests handy anyway since they're free.
