Are they scare stories though? The Delta variant is real. Thankfully we had the majority of the country vaccinated in time.
I think something can be real and a scare story at the same time.
I think the government are terrified of the resultant enquiry after this and are using any and every excuse to cover their arse as we re-open.
Also, transmission is largely based on modelling, which has been proven to be
very flawed. It's comparing apples and oranges - the original strain saw us lockdown almost totally like the Black Death was here, compared to now when everyone is basically ignoring it completely. So of course the groups that are unvaccinated will be spreading it quicker.
I find it personally extremely unlikely that this 'Delta' and 'Delta Plus' are as transmissable as they say compared to the original without losing its' lethality, as every virus mutation generally consists of a trade-off in that respect. But I don't know this, same as the experts don't know this, because it's all based on modelling and very obviously flawed assumptions.
