Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

We haven't even got to the 21st yet and so far the unlocking has commenced as planned. The data is showing a huge increase in cases in pockets of the country and we know how quickly it can spread. We can only react to the data in front of us and other than climbing cases we're not 100% sure on the impact of the vaccination programe or the impact of the new variant just yet. I'd very much doubt a tory would government would willingly restrict our ability to spend money for longer than was needed. Unless there's some big conspiracy going on..
Everywhere else in Europe seems far more comfortable opening things up, despite being behind the UK in terms of vaccinations.

I'm not going to get drawn into a argument about semantics - The things in which we are limited are the 'risky' things
Why are they? As I said, Pagel can go for a holiday in the Highlands and that's not risky, yet a holiday in France is uber risky. What's the difference? Are the trains to Scotland somehow cleaner than the Eurostar?

I'm not sure which things you think we aren't permitted to do at the moment - but in my head the 'risky' situations are when large numbers of individuals congregate in an enclosed space for a sustained period of time
I've mentioned to you before, seeing my family would be nice, but they had 2 deaths yesterday in Czech so yes, super duper risky. Never mind that the wife is double jabbed and tested 3 times each week. Major health risk.

I want the world to go back to normal as much as you do

I have to live with knowing that my dad died in a hospital room alone and terrified and I wasn't there to console him due to this mess

The economic and societal disadvantages of restrictions outweigh the health risks of opening up at this point. I've thought that for a couple of months now. I don't see why we would be looking to push back the opening up date when over 40m people have received a jab. We are at the stage where people have to be allowed to use personal choice and personal responsibility. I don't know if there is more can be done to increase uptake, but unfortunately we are not going to convince everyone to get vaccinated.

Things are so much different than this time last year and it's fair for people to want to enjoy their summer.

Facts ^

Should open up 21st. To be honest should have completely opened up by now - just a mad overabundance of caution.

Will people still die? Yes, but in their 10s at most, not 100s. We have to tolerate that as the lockdowns are killings/harming many, many, many more than that.

I'm guilty of it myself as I look for updates at 4pm daily. But we really have to get out of this fixation with infection rates. It really doesn't matter anymore. All of the higher risk have had at least one jab and the remainder of adults will have one within the next month, by which stage the higher risk will all be fully vaccinated.

We may as well record the number of common cold infections.

Tbh his words have been somewhat distorted.

Worth a follow, gives a detailed breakdown about once a week on hospital situation and raises good discussion points.
