But I don’t see how you can completely divorce them either. Some actions, taken both months ago and recently, make a country less able to identify and react well to this crisis even when given ample warning.

I’m sympathetic to the concept that you shouldn’t “play politics” but what about accountability? Especially when it is still influencing current response?

It reminds me of the gun control debate, if we keep putting off until tomorrow there is no chance of an improvement.

She’s right about “Nothing happened to your family” from a health perspective, but that’s still going to be a hard sell to entrepreneurs who lose their businesses and banks start foreclosing on homes. Sure people may still be alive, but (financially) their lives will be ruined.

This is obviously an extremely serious illness, but the looming economic disaster if the US actually does just shut it’s economy down is the bigger threat in my opinion. I’m fortunate to be fairly young and fairly healthy, so on a scale of 1 to 10 I’d rate my fear of the actual virus about a 3, and my fear of shutting the economy down for any prolonged period at about an 11.
There is a huge generational cost balance with this virus - the physical risks are disproportionately (but not exclusively) borne by the older groups whilst the financial costs are disproportionately (but not exclusively) borne by younger generations. Unfortunately I don’t see many easy solutions.

Well, no, obviously, because there are a ton of people who are asymptomatic and others who wouldn't even bother telling anyone.
it wasn't to ask if they killed them all like, do they murder any suspected patients at all? horrid

First thing I do is go and see how my children are sleeping. Our middle child has asthma and gets a chest infection each year, so she’s our real concern.

Good on you, must be hard with asthma as shortness of breath is par for the course with it but also a symptom for the virus. Guess thermometer usage will be right up now.

Anyone else wake up each morning now very acutely conscious of whether they’re breathing the same as normal? It’s a daily routine now.

Can you hold your breath for 10 seconds.
Check your temperature.
Is your dry cough persistent.
Do you have persistent headaches.
Do you have diarrhea.
Are you feeling fatigued.

This is what I check for and my family. Smoking and hangovers notwithstanding.

People furious at waterstones in the comments section but I think it is an essential decision to keep bookstores open, mental health is vital and if it weren't for the books I would have already gone mad

To be clear I’m just referencing political game playing, rather than genuine political conversation which should happen.

Genuinely puzzling why this outbreak hasn't hit Japan. Among the first cases outside China were there. They have very few isolation policies and no lockdown, but there is no surge...perhaps it is coming? This article lays out all the possibilities:

Maybe it's because young people isolating themselves and rubbing one out 4 times a day was a social norm long before Covid came along
