Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I do find it amusing that if you’d have said that Covid came from a lab in early 2020 you’d have probably been labelled a Fox Mulder at best and a racist, right wing paranoid, tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy nutter at worst. Can’t us left leaning people engage in a good conspiracy as well?

This was CNN last year. The NY times published articles with a similar stance:

I guess it’s fair to argue that if you speculate and theorise on something without evidence then by definition you are engaging in something as a conspiracy theorist. But how does that saying go? “An absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”. I guess the question is, was it unfair to speculate on the origins of Covid in 2020? Well if we don’t want this situation to ever occur again surely we need to speculate and then investigate. It’ll be interesting to see if the world is allowed to do the latter.

Oh and Epstein didn’t kill himself and aliens are real.

Personally I don’t think it was unfair as such to speculate onnthe origins if it was a genuine “wonder where it came from“ ie here are the options and here is the evidence for each theory and with an understanding that information can change and so therefore can the conclusions as time goes on.

However some of the more vocal elements very clearly had an agenda that they were keen to push regardless of any evidence.

Know there are lots of fun things to catch up with we’ve all missed out on over the last year but worth adding catchup on some preventative screenings to the to-do list too.

It's awful that a lot of people will end up dying due to the knock on affects of covid. But I completely understand why it has had to be that way. I had cancer myself when I was young and almost certainly only survived because it was caught early enough. I have noticed recently though that there are more adverts on TV here in the UK imploring people to go to the doctor if they have symptoms of cancer. Some of the symptoms sadly correlate with covid (cough, shortness of breath} so people might just be putting it down to that. And then you have the issue of people not wanting to go to the doctor for fear of catching covid or fear of wasting their time.

Glad they are doing some public health advertising to try to address the issue. It is so very easy to procrastinate on screenings/getting an issue checked out but as you say catching cancer early generally makes it easier to treat and much more survivable - happy you are one of those that did.

So assuming most everyone shows up for their second dose, you guys should be at, or very near, the herd immunity threshold by the end of June. Fantastic.

I'm not entirely sure on how it works but there is at least a 3 week delay between being vaccinated and having enough antibodies to make covid even less of a threat than it is (in someone who isn't unhealthy).

It couldn't be taken seriously at the time (IIRC) because you had people lowing and moo-ing over the virus being created in Wuhan - ie 'came from a lab' meaning engineered, modified in a lab. The viral sequence was intensively studied straight away and this was dismissed - (by scientists roaring with laughter that they've just gotten a free Nature paper).

An accidental leak was always at least a possibility - I guess it just needed some distance for more serious voices to start to be heard on the issue. Not sure where it takes us anyhow?

I’m at a loss as to why anyone needs to holiday abroad this year.....
Selfish feckers. Thats why.

Id like to see legal proceedings brought up against the government at some point for airports not being completely closed down early on in all this. If we had shut ourselves down to tourism in and out we'd have controlled this by June 2020..

If the government had shut tourism down, they could have funded all the airlines and not had to pay out all the furlough money.
