The country, and especially the hospitality industry, is on it's arse

At the first opportunity we've allowed people to travel abroad to spend all of the money they've saved during numerous lockdowns

Wouldn't it have been wiser to allow some of that money to slosh around our own tourist industry just for this summer? And not only that but reduce the potential for new strains to enter the country?

Is it just me that sees it as an easy win for the government that they've completely bollocksed up again?!

Seen the prices of any UK trips at the moment? Hotels in Cornwall and the Lake District will make a fortune this summer. Pretty much everywhere is fully booked.

Important when you read Pagels posts to remember she is a lockdown fanatic with similar views to Davek. The figures for Bolton show that vaccination works.
They certainly are encouraging (as is all the other data I’ve seen) but the sample size is still small and we are still fairly early on in good data collection so I don’t think you can make definitive statements just quite yet whilst still being happy with the way it is trending.

I know she is more on the cautious side of opening up but I generally try to get views from a wide range as I find it helps me challenge my own biases in analyzing data.

There are beautiful places all over the country, if people looked outside of the usual places there's loads of options

We looked at booking a few places and ended up getting an ok deal in Wales and a few nights in the lakes but its a lot more expensive per night than you'd pay abroad. The lakes in the summer you're paying £200 a night or more for a standard bnb which is mental.

Hospital figures - 4 deaths were announced today, up 3 on yesterday’s unreported total of 1 and down 3 on last Monday. 3 deaths were in English hospitals, up 2 on yesterday and the exact same total as last week. The 7 day rolling average falls to 7.29

All settings - for the 28 day cut off, 5 deaths were announced today, up one on both yesterday and last Monday. The 7 day rolling average rises slightly to 10.71

For the 60 day cut off, 5 deaths were announced today, down 1 on yesterday and the exact same total as last Monday. The 7 day rolling average remains the same at 23.71

Saw something similar with Pfizer in Israel, two doses very helpful with variants especially with B.1.315
SARS-CoV-2 mutations may diminish vaccine-induced protective immune responses, and the durability of such responses has not been previously reported. Here, we present a comprehensive assessment of the impact of variants B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P.1, B.1.429, and B.1.526 on binding, neutralizing, and ACE2-blocking antibodies elicited by the vaccine mRNA-1273 over seven months. Cross-reactive neutralizing responses were rare after a single dose of mRNA-1273. At the peak of response to the second dose, all subjects had robust responses to all variants. Binding and functional antibodies against variants persisted in most subjects, albeit at low levels, for 6 months after the primary series of mRNA-1273. Across all assays, B.1.351 had the greatest impact on antibody recognition, and B.1.1.7 the least. These data complement ongoing studies of clinical protection to inform the potential need for additional boost vaccinations.

Its a relative position; but back in the day, pre covid, how many folk returned home after a break in the med with dodgy guts? I did.

For the sake of balance, I am not a fling it all open merchant, and personally, I wouldnt do anything different than I have done since it kicked off.

So what is "safe"?
Absolutely no idea, but travel is seldom essential as has been proved over the last 15 months. For most it’s an indulgence and one that I was hoping to have to Australia in November last year, but will now have to wait. Trip was booked about a week before this kicked off, such is life.

This is the problem with the UK.
Mate of mine rents a self catering cottage down in St Ives every August for a week with his wife. Nothing fancy a 2 bedroom 'cottage' (terraced house).
He pays £2,500 for the week. He was told the price is now £7,500 a week. He obviously kicked it into touch and is now going to the Maldives
for 10 days all inclusive at Christmas time for the same money. Just pure greed.

Raises two things really:

1. We need to remember vaccines dont stop everyone from dying people still die of the flu with the flu vaccine.

2. Ideally we should wait until every adult has had at least 1 dose of vaccine before the June date goes ahead which would give a bit longer for the older/most vulnerable to have both doses.
