Swedish deaths are weird, yesterday it was just 1, today it's 36.
They have a different reporting approach than many other countriesSwedish deaths are weird, yesterday it was just 1, today it's 36.
The Indian variant in the UK:
Ravi Gupta at the University of Cambridge said at the briefing today that research suggests that B.1.617.1 does have a greater ability to bypass defences triggered by vaccination or an earlier coronavirus infection. He said there are signs it is better at spreading among vaccinated people, even though vaccination still appears to protect against severe disease. “In terms of controlling transmission, there may be a degree of compromise,” he said.
There is a possibility the version in the UK, B.1.617.2, becomes the country’s dominant form of the coronavirus, said Gupta. “It all depends on the dynamics of transmission and how quickly we can detect [variants] and close them off.”

If we go ahead with the May 17th reopening this will spread like wildfire.
A lot of the current cases appear to be related to schools - seems an odd time to reduce mask use in education , especially in regions where the variant is prevalent. As tracked...
So now we have our confirmation that this virus is a variant of concern locally.
I suggest Sefton Council at minimum keep their pubs and restaurants closed in terms of indoor business is concerned.
Stop talking tripe and deal with the issue.Your comments actually look like you have your fingers crossed and you want things to take a turn for the worst.

Not seen anything re an increase in kids but anecdotally from India younger adults might be more vulnerable to this variant than wild type. However that could be due to lots of others reasons for this apparent effect so really need more data - the UK surge testing will hopefully provide that.Any view on its effects on kids ?....

It's ok though, the GOT Independent SAGE group says there'll be no infections from schools.
More seriously for me is that Sefton is one of those places with masses of restaurants and bars from Southport through Ainsdale through Formby and onto Crosby.
They will be accelerators for any variant which is highly infectious.
The borough council and Liverpool City Region need to demand surge testing in these communities and keep everything locked down, otherwise Liverpool and other boroughs in Merseyside will be rampant with it.
