A combination of lockdowns + vaccine + better weather + a less densely populated nation than here will have a huge effect on lowering infection there.

I think we need to be dialling down the claims for the vaccines and how much they will release us from this stranglehold.
They certainly cant do the job themselves, and (as you can see on here) there's more than enough people determined to use any OTT claims for them to spin them as a panacea so they can do whatever they please and not remain disciplined.

The vaccines will help, but we are in our infancy with this and we need to have maximum caution. We certainly cant afford a full opening up of society and the economy...though that seems to be the route being taken on both sides of the Atlantic.

There's hope for the future based on the correct appliance of the science...then there's stupidity.
I agree with some of your notes of caution on opening fully up although some of that can be addressed by effective monitoring and keeping a few of the easier NPI like indoor masks for a bit.

However we’ll have to agree to disagree on the bolded bit - all the evidence I’ve seen so far is that full vaccination is incredibly effective against both the original strain and the current variants. Could that change with new variants, yes, hence as @tsubaki notes we need to ensure we have good systems in place to quickly identify any problems and we’ll probably need a vaccine boosters strategy for the autumn/winter.

Quite surprised they are not free for anyone who wants one in the USA. Basically nobody pays for tests in the UK. Only time you pay in the UK is for tests to go abroad I believe.

Highly doubt many people would pay here though, it might be a different mindset.
Testing outside the home in the US is free, say for if you need a test before an operation or if you feel you have symptoms. However these are “at home” tests similar to over the counter pregnancy tests that you don’t have to rely on any third party to complete.

Regression treating each individual mitigation measure as having an independent effect show that report of daily symptom screening is clearly associated with greater risk reductions than the average measures (Fig. 3, Table S8), with some evidence that teacher mask mandates and cancelling extra-curricular activities are also associated with larger reductions than average.
