I guess a government, like people, sometimes have to play the cards they are dealt. In normal times, nothing like this amount of cash would have been pledged, but we are where we are. Political dogma flies out of the window.

And there will be thousands of folk who would have been dealt a curve ball in their life, that they can either face and deal with. Or not.
Good if your on paye employment, I feel sorry for those on job seekers and apparently zero hours people who won't get a set salary and probably SSP.

A few years ago I was on a zero-hours contract but was PAYE. Hopefully that will be the case for the vast majority.

You have described me and Mrs R there mate. I have had to retire early, and she will be claiming sommet next week.

Like I said, life sometimes get different.

£380 a month is not enough for people to live on.

But yes, if bills are frozen then that'll help.

I'm not on about me here. I'll hopefully have a bit of work to keep me going on top of that.

My bills, as it stands, are around £700 a month. Soon that'll be down a bit because of a loan I pay off which ends in May.

That £380 pays most of my rent. Still got car, phone etc. I can't cut costs as I'm under contract.

Well I obviously wasn't including the cost of rent when I said bills temp frozen was I?

People spend way too much money on things; I think it would be a good exercise for people to evaluate the way they live your life. I used to live more, shall we say, efficiently on £100 p/w week than I am now on a lot more than that.

Showing your working Jimbo, this'll be good

Freeze my rent, utilities and council tax.

Food for me? I can do a week's shop for about £30. Petrol? Won't be driving anywhere so that's gone. My car tax is free this year. My insurance is £50 per month. Phone bill is now £20 p/m. BT is expensive, about £80. I'd cancel Netflix/Prime etc.

It can be done - people are completely reckless with their finances when they're used to having more money.

There's so much you can do. For example, I ditched monthly mobile phone contracts and bought a phone outright, second hand but still 'new' - the Huawei P30 Pro. £10 a month I pay for that. In the long run it will save me £400-£500 when compared to a 24 month contract.

Good economics is about doing the right things to help the country at the right time.

Bad economics is stubbornly doing the same ideologically driven things no matter what the situation.

That's why the government, especially the chancellor, deserve a lot of credit today. I did not expect anything close to that from a conservative government. Businesses and workers will be very relieved.
