Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

I work as a Product Manager for a Travel Agency here in NZ and basically, last week was a nightmare. New Zealand, followed by Australia, closed their borders to all but citizens during the week, so basically we've just been assisting foreigners in the country to get home, and Kiwis overseas to get back to New Zealand.

The airlines who fly into the country have obviously massively cut down their routes, so it's been near impossible trying to find seats departing in the next few days; Air New Zealand and Qantas have slashed over 80% of their routes, Emirates have suspended operations into the country from March 29 - June 30 (they normally have three daily flights into NZ). Trying to ascertain which countries even allow a transit airside for foreigners is hard, as there is so little info out there. Most countries do not allow foreigners to enter; only their citizens can come into the country.

We've had people pay, in some cases, up to tens of thousands of dollars to get home on earlier flights (around 5,000 pounds); and in many cases we simply can't get people home due to no more commercial flights and have had to simply advise them to call their Embassy in the country they're stuck in for assistance. We've had people stuck in Uruguay, Morocco, Peru, and a lot stuck in the Philippines on islands other than Luzon (The Filipino government has shut down all domestic travel, so if you're a foreigner somewhere other than Manila, Davao or Cebu where the international airports are, you're basically stuck).

I'm normally pretty optimistic but it's hard to see the travel industry, let alone the airline industry, surviving in at least it's current guise. Obviously everyone in the company I work for is fearful for their jobs, fortunately we're a large company so we should be able to plod along and survive for maybe a couple of months, beyond that it's hard to see where we go from there unless things dramatically improve with containing the virus and the number of new cases.
