It’s a crazy, warped world when people will know more about the Kardashians then Dr Li, or even the teams behind the vaccines!

Given the available data, the supply of other US vaccines and the already high vaccine hesitancy in the US then “loaning” all those AZ doses to Canada/Mexico where they would likely go to over 60s seems like a good solution all round.

That New York Times article about Dr Kariko is amazing, so informative. It is a great answer to the people that say these vaccines have been rushed, especially the mRNA ones (which lots of people say are "new") as this has been decades in the making. But also the other vaccines that are based on years of understanding of the way different coronaviruses work.

Also, she is clearly a legend and probably deserves at least a Nobel Prize for her continued work in a field which could massively help with numerous other things as the article mentions.

I think a lot of us could do with just taking a step back from all the horror that has and might still be to come and taking some time to appreciate what these scientists have done for us over the past year (and before) so that we even potentially have a way out of this so soon.

Tbh the whole COVID pandemic has made me understand seasonal flu better and realize how many deaths due to it over the years (whilst obviously less than COVID) have been a senseless waste.

Especially since seasonal flu affects kids badly I’m perhaps naively hopeful that we don’t go back to prepandemic rates of seasonal flu via things like better hygiene, more uptake of flu jab and even perhaps some mask use.

Seasonal flu deaths over the years are a disaster and in the main uneccessary. Well established and efficient vaccines have been available for years.

We just need to persuede more people to take them.
