I don’t think we are getting complacent anymore. We are slowly unlocking after several months of severe restrictions. The government have been clear in their messaging that there could be a 3rd wave and that further unlocking will be dependent on meeting key criteria. I am a negative Niall by nature but there is good reason for optimism re the UK situation. Not just with the speed of the vaccine roll out but also the genomic sequencing. International travel/holidays forget about it for 2021 as far as I am concerned but a somewhat normal Domestic summer in the UK looks possible.
A very sensible attitude in my opinion. We need more people thinking that way.

They jnew the consequences of their actions; they were told them. They did nothing to change course.

They served up to the world the variant that prolonged the pandemic.

Stop defending them.

To be fair and centrist like there was some money to be made...

Well considering these age group in link are nowhere near one jab of uk vaccination program, there warnings from further a field, (then we are island nation). Another case of baby boomers applying the fabled "I'm alright jack".

They sort of did....

How the UK lost control of the mutant strain of Covid-19

In July, scientific advisers warned of the potential for a significant coronavirus variant to occur in the winter. But instead of preparing for the worst, the government created the ideal conditions for the virus to mutate – and thrive.

Phil Whitaker.

.....In July, the government’s scientific advisory group Sage warned of the potential for a clinically significant mutation to occur during the winter. At the same time, the shadow group Independent Sage repeatedly urged the Johnson administration to take advantage of the summer hiatus to change its policy to a “zero Covid” strategy. This could have driven infection rates into the ground. Instead, we got “Eat Out to Help Out” and the progressive easing of restrictions that allowed daily case numbers to continue in four figures right into the autumn, pump priming the inevitable second wave. With countless billions of viral replications now occurring every day, the chance of advantageous mutations arising is high – far higher than in countries such as Taiwan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, where “zero Covid” policies have kept case numbers, and hence viral replications, at tiny levels. And our ailing TTI system, incapable of aggressive suppression of outbreaks, helped create conditions in which any new strain could start to flourish.
It was certainly bad luck that the VOC arose in the UK; there are many other countries with similarly compromised approaches to the pandemic. South Africa appears to have incubated an even more infectious variant, 501.V2, with a greater degree of structural change to the spike protein targeted by extant vaccines. But, like all “accidents”, the VOC wasn’t purely a freak occurrence. With its failure to heed warnings about quite how rapidly and seriously the Covid pandemic could change, the Johnson government has been caught playing with fire. As a consequence, we, and now the rest of the world, are going to get burned.

Sage/UK government knew about the English variant in September but only told the WHO in December. Negligence.

My reading of that shows that they first noticed the new sequencing early December, and retrospective retesting, armed with the new sequencing, showed them that it was present in earlier cases.

Of course, I may well be incorrect.

I'm not defending them Dave. We've done absolutely nothing that any other western country has done. Nothing. In fact most other countries have been less strict at times. You make out the UK, no that England is the only 'kin country in the world that hasn't shut down for a year.

They were wrong not to put London in the top tier. They were also wrong to put Cornwall in the lowest tier too. But at the time they did not know the new variant was spreading. They can't make decisions to close down the economy based on what. could happen. Only on what will or will most probably happen. We all knew that variants can happen but how many, apart from you obviously, expected it to happen in Kent ffs

Personally, my biggest gripe is the lack of contingency planning for the 'what ifs'. What arguably lost time was the lack of a clear plan to stamp down on a rise in cases or the emergence of a new variant.

I work for a large organisation which is mercifully distanced enough from the government to have independence in planning and decision making. Due to scenario mapping and contingency planning we moved fairly seamlessly when situations changed.

Quite incredible there was no equivalent at national level. So yes, we couldn't and shouldn't knee jerk react to what ifs, but we should have had a plan.

You're spot on mate. I read it the same way. In fact, our scientists need praising for identifying and advising the WHO of this variant so quickly. It's something they really are world class at. But still, some on here still find some way of using it as a stick to beat ourselves with

126,000 dead. Far and away the worst fatality record of any comparable country in Europe.

I'm not just asking you to not defend them, Ilm asking you to condemn them for their record of social murder.

Every world leader has committed some form of social murder in the past 13-15 months, most are still doing so. Funny how they’re getting a free pass
