Completely different situation. They never had a vaccine either.
It was a viral pandemic so clearly not a different situation than this current viral pandemic. Relaxing social distancing measures were an issue they got wrong as we have.

The vaccine could be the game-changer for this pandemic but if mutates again we might be reliant on those same social distancing measures. Two really terrible situations :(

Whats the answer then? You can't lockdown forever incase another variant appears. The scientists seem confident that the vaccines will have an impact on all versions so we are hopefully past the worst of it. There will be further deaths but hopefully we are past the worst of it.

Old people succumbing to the only certainty in life isn't the tragedy that you make it out to be and I appreciate that it may sound shocking to simpletons but people died alone before this disease and people will continue to die alone.

What is a tragedy however is the fact that our nation's children have pretty much missed out on a year of school, that our nation's young adults are not able to attend lectures and seminars or have a solid foundation on which to start their careers.
Thanks for showing everybody just what you are.

I thank you.

The vaccines will sort it, and even if a variant pops up that they can’t, the boffins will just produce another one.....

You need to realise that as well as protecting the body from covid, the vaccines also teach the immune system to recognise and deal with it in the future.

Thats what I believe and aligns with what I posted? All vaccines should have some sort of impact on variants, it might not be 100% but it will help the body a lot.

We now know that more deaths will occur amongst our age group from lack of jobs and income. We need to get the economy moving again and we need to get people who work in the service industry back to work.

It's not just a case of people not being able to go on holiday BTW, what is lost amongst the bedwetters is that people are not able to be united with their loved ones abroad. A friend of mine has no idea of when he'll be able to see his wife who lives in Thailand. Another friend is a new father, his family haven't been able to see the new addition to the family.

The government is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut and it will ultimately destroy more lives than it saves.
Boo hoo, I’ve missed having a proper bond with my youngest niece and nephew because I’ve barely seen them this past year (one is 2 the day before my birthday, the other turns one at the end of April), I’ve missed nearly a year of my oldest nephew’s life as well. I’ve not seen friends for nearly 3 months. These are the sacrifices that have had to be made because of this pandemic

Not that much of a threat really, you'd be surprised how many Spaniards holiday in the UK. This Summer is likely to see most countries holiday seasons being domestic. The town I live in has a beach area that is popular with the Madrileños so we will struggle at Easter but Summer should be business as usual.
The UK Holidaymakers in Spain spent , 2019 roughly 18 billion euro in Spain alone, add in the Likes Of Greece, Portugal ect it's not a sum any of those countries can really afford to lose lightly.

The vaccines work against all known variants. We are in a completely different position to twelve months ago.
You are right about this, the issue may be the unknown variants. There is a lot we still have to learn about this virus and these vaccines. I'm not saying we are in the same situation that we were a year ago, some countries are definitely in a better position than others. However, until we get the virus under control worldwide there is a chance that Covid could continue mutating into to new and unknown variants. So my point is that we just need to be cautious and don't let our guards down so easily. Let's learn from the past to make better decisions going forward. Here in the US for example, it makes no sense to remove mask mandate when we still have the virus going around and still have a lot more people to vaccinate, just simple policies that could still prevent this virus from going rampant again.
