Absolutely brilliant news about hospitals in England. Looks like yesterday’s disappointment was just Monday lagging on reporting.

Patient numbers dropped 644 to 10,121 - good chance we will see four figures tomorrow. Was last week 13,511.

We are back on track, much to the annoyance of the lockdown loving brigade and Brazil variant scaremongers, but delight of those who just want to live.

I still can't get my head around the fact that in the UK alone, on average we are potentially saving the lives of around 400,000 people every single day by giving them a vaccine. Every single scientist, doctor, nurse, GP, company and public servant who has been responsible for producing these vaccines, supplying them and rolling them out is a hero.

Its more than that. The vax cuts transmission as well.

They could have handled the PR side a lot better.

The point still stands though.

Imagine if your government would have listened to their scientists back in February last year and locked down the country then? Instead they ignored locking down for 3 more weeks and the result was a disaster...then they ignored the scientists again last autumn when they said that we needed a series of firewall breaks to take the steam out of deadly infectious surges...and they again ignored the science...and again we had mass death.

In short: imagine having a UK government that listened to their scientific advisors - the bulk of those 123,000 killed would still be here.

But they didn't do that. And, in fact, they went after the one high profile SAGE scientist (Ferguson) willing to blow the whistle on them in terms of what herd immunity looked like with hundreds of thousands dead and had him vilified. THAT'S how much your government are concerned about making correct decisions about your health.
Definitely not 'my government' Dave. I hate them more than most I can tell you that.

The vaccine has nothing to do with the government other than they made a good decision with the AZ contract/roll out. I have mentioned on countless times the government have failed at every point throughout the pandemic.

Indeed - I didn't even consider that. It's absolutely astonishing and surely something worth celebrating.

2nd dose for the oldies being ramped up as well. My elderly parents got their date for them today.

Mrs R and I are in this small (relatively) group of younger vulnerable/carers, and both have been pinged to get one. GP surgery are hoping to do a home visit for her, and my surgery has told me they will just tack me on to a vax day when she is done.

Its astonishing.

I live in a family brought up to vote Tory, all the family think Boris is brilliant and it isn’t his fault about the deaths while other governments wouldn’t have done “as well”; we live in a tincan which is overcrowded.

What a load of blinded rubbish, all caused by their upbringing. They took ages over locking down, took ages over actually doing something with border controls and were actually going to do the Swedish approach. Maybe it works in Sweden with a spread out population, but not in this overcrowded country. Also, it wasn’t the government that caused the fantastic vaccine rollout, it was our independent regulators.

All these simple things they messed up on and despite being an island as well.

The comments Boris made about the city of Liverpool when Ken Bigley was murdered by extremists, constantly after photo shoots of himself doing stupid things (bungee jumping with Union Jack bunting on the strings while caught up in the zips and Rugby tackling a kid) and his other pathetic antics, made me worried from the very start this country is going to become sh*t as far as it’s government is concerned when he became PM.

French doctors slam 'AstraZeneca bashing' as France enacts U-turn on jabs for over-65s

Only a quarter of France's AstraZeneca stocks have been used after 'Professor (of populist politics)' Emmanuel Macron called it 'quasi-ineffective' for over 65s before U-turn.

French doctors have blamed deep domestic scepticism of AstraZeneca on the “bad press” it has received, including criticism from Emmanuel Macron that it was “quasi-ineffective” for the elderly.

The indirect criticism of the French 'professor' president , who was forced to say he would take the jab if necessary last week, came as Gallic health regulators said they would make the jab available for the over 65s.

Professor Macron fanned Gallic scepticism over the jab developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University in January hours before it received a green light from the European Medecines Agency by saying: “Everything points to thinking it is quasi-ineffective on people older than 65, some say those 60 years or older."

He was right left and front row in support of the futile raids on Astra Zeneca factories in the mistaken belief they were hiding vaccines and diverting stocks to Britain. The French politician not surprisingly has few friends in the scientific community with his psuedo-scientific announcements helping to keep the European vaccine effort at the slow stop very slow and stop again pace he's more than comfortable with.

I expect Dave will be along any minute to agree with you and give the post a ‘like’......

I‘m sure that @davek will agree with me that Macron should be prosecuted for murdering people through his inappropriate political intervention ..........

Austria and Denmark the two latest countries to try and buy vaccines on their own without reference to the European Union procurement scheme. This amidst widespread criticism of it's procurement and approval procedures, the painfully slow take up and scepticism fanned by it's leading figures (notably 'Professor' Macron), the muddled and unnecessary campaign against Astra-Zeneca and general negativity of its leaders.

The smaller nations of Slovakia, Poland and Hungary have already taken steps to procure their own supplies with one EU official bemoaning the centralist approach whose aim were purportedly to secure supplies for smaller nations. The smaller nations are now copying the UK, Israel and the US and apparently happier procuring their own independent supplies regardless of what the EU does.

I blame the inappropriate, premature and let's face it absolutely populist political interference of the likes of Macron and his ilk.

Macron relies on bashing the English to shore up his re-election prospects and is more than ready to weigh in on any company with even a hint of a connection with England.

His blatant electioneering and populist flag waving have hindered the French effort and engendered a wider European copy cat fear thinking the idiot might be onto something

The man is a menace hidden behind a smile and an undeserving prominence in Europe. This unfortunately means his unjustified caution and general unscientific criticism is given some kind of credence. We already have the Coronavirus at higher levels in Europe thanks to this idiot but now have the virus of Macron inspired fear to contend with too.

I think Austria and Denmark are looking more long term no? They want their own production and research capacity for future generations of vaccines for mutant strains. Interesting that Kurz took a shot at the EMA and not the EU (or VDL)
