Why are they refusing it
Spoke to my sister yesterday, she has lived in Germany for nearly 40 years. (Wolfgang, her husband, is one of the nicest guys you could meet. His name just does not suit him!) They haven't had their vaccinations yet but will have them when available. She said that the media over there is full of the view that the the vaccines don't work properly and doesn't give much protection, which is why many over there are refusing the jabs.
Because it gives people hope, and something to look forward to. It also gives businesses an ability to plan for the future.
You really need to stop viewing everything the government does in such a biased way. There’s nothing wrong with giving a plan to the public based on tests being met.
Like I said yesterday, I had a proper spring - like, physically too - in my step after the news.
It's not to credit anyone really, it's just good to have an idea of what life might be able to look like if things go well. We all know it's a big if, as was stressed over and over again in the press conference.
I think the decision of the government to ban using it on over 65s, while understandable, will have helped fuel the fire.
I don't agree with the decision but I see why, on the lack of testing evidence at the time they made the call, they chose to do it. But it probably will have factored into any media frenzy then, too.
It wasn’t understandable, it was a naked political move, and now it’s going to bite them on the arse......
I don't think it'll be the only reason, but Germany decided to go against the EMA's licence and have elected not to use the AZ jab on people 65 and over, because of a lack of evidence of the efficacy in that age range (that's because only a small percentage - 8% IIRC - of the initial study was done on people over that age). It's fair enough, though there was all the uproar over the false headlines in the German media last month when there was the massive rift with AZ. That probably hasn't helped.
Maybe people are seeing that they won't offer it to over 65s so thinking it's not good enough for them, but the issue is, it has always been proved to be perfectly effective for people under 65, even from the initial studies, so they should be taking it. Just like somebody over here should be taking whatever vaccine they get offered.
Now, to add into all of this, there's added studies that they've been doing on volunteers in the older age groups, and now the real-world evidence which is coming out in the UK right now (the three studies published yesterday) of it working perfectly well in older groups, specifically the over 80s.
Well... there was a smaller amount of evidence on that age group. So, I kind of - kind of - get it in that sense. But, like @Tubey said a lot at the time, the efficacy was never going to drop off a cliff, and the EMA had licenced it for all ages.
Just watching an interview with a doctor on Germany saying that the AZ is very effective in the older people.
All the early studies of real world application of the AZ vaccine is starting to make the EU look incredibly silly.Just watching an interview with a doctor on Germany saying that the AZ is very effective in the older people.
