Maybe.

Look. If they get through the 4 million most vulnerable with 2 jabs, I'd agree that reaching the rest of the popualtion like that would be an achievement. As it stands, it;s a political decision to reach down to younger groups first before giving full protection to the vulnerable...they know "17 millon vaccinated" etc scores them popularity at the polls; they also know it makes businesses open earlier. That is all at the expense of the full coverage of the vulnerable.

You're not daft, you see that I'm sure.
The quicker they get more jabs in arms the quicker the pubs open, the quicker people get "back to normal", get back to work, pay taxes, spend their money.

They certainly arent doing it to save lives, I see that, sure its political point-scoring, but its saving lives, so they can score as many points as they like, I care only about saving lives Dave, that's my only focus, to protect life, cos life is precious.

But then we could just say let's lock all the older people away and let everyone else get on with their lives, couldn't we...
No, we most definitely couldn't.

Is that what you want?

We must hand the vulnerable the most protection that is possible. That means them being vaccinated fully and first; everyone else in the adult population vacccinated; a regime of social distancing maintained and a fuull track and rtrace strategy in place.

When that happens, the elderly will be in a much better position to restart their lives. But only when the above is in place.

Saving lives efficiently in this crisis is protecting full the vulnerable first and foremost.

Ok.

But do we fit double seat belts on cars driven by the over 80s or do we just hope that 1 seat belt will be enough and they take the required measures to mean they get by with 1?
By required measures you mean they isolate themselves until they get the second jab?

Yes, but dont forget, many of them have carers etc and so cant dictate who comes near them.

Everything im seeing suggests that 1 dose of most vaccines gives people some quite long term protection from death.

We currently have 17m people and their families will sleep easier at night.

I ring my mother daily and can not wait till she tells me she had a vaccine, I wont care how long it takes for number 2, cos number 1 will mean shes safe.

Its difficult to explain, but I will do my best.

The efficacy of a vaccine isnt a measurement of protection it will give. Its a measure of how good it is in boosting the immune system, in other words, doing what it should do. Teaching the immune system to begin to defend itself.

So, one jab from any vaccine with a 70 to 90% efficacy will all do the critical leg work. A booster will do that, boost.

The point of a vaccine programme is to do several things. Protection from death/serious illness is #1, obvs. But that isnt enough for a new CV virus. The flu boost for example is boosting an immune system already trained to recognise flu.

Our immune system does not know CV 19. Now, millions do.

No one gets full protection.

AZ gives 60-70 per cent coverage, so they say. The Pfizer one much more...howver they also say the vaccines need that booster jab for longevity of the protective effect...and Pfizer wont commit to that much more than beyond a handful of weeks.

No, it's not what I want at all. But you know that. You just know you made a daft point that actually undermined your insistence that we should never get back to being able to do stuff.

We will have all of the vulnerable groups fully vaccinated by the end of May at this rate, while simultaneously having the majority of the adult population having had one dose, which provides a lot of protection - and this has been proven.

This^^^^...my daughter actually cried when we told her we had received the first dose...that first dose is a life saver, and the French, Germans and all the rest can do one with their political negativity....
