I think we can take the opinion of Fauci from his peers including Larry Brilliant over that of trump sycophant. Fauci has consistently been a very reassuring voice even in the backdrop of an anti-science regime and worked tirelessly to save lives while trump supporters sent death threats to his daughters
Yep.

Compare him with the whipped lap dog, Whitty. It's a painful comparison for Whitty.

Ive been following Fauci's word over the state of play with Covid19 rather than the UK Banana Republic's politicised clowns.

I'm not sure treating it as a competition is all that healthy mate, no one in the West has been perfect in their response but I find it hard to believe people of science have political goals constantly in mind, even if their public persona has to be a balancing act because those in charge are very ruthless, very dishonest people. At least both were until very recently in the states

The reduction in seasonal flu continues to be a silver lining

Whats interesting to think about is if we had a cure for eveything - Flu, Cancer, all other diseases would it actually result in more Covid type viruses popping up to take their place as human population growth/expansion continues into nature's habitat?

Something to be wary about for me in the future - sadly we are not meant to live forever as much as we would all love to.

I see Whitty change his tune regularly in a way I dont see Fauci doing. I certainly dont think there's as much independence of the CMO from HM Government. Whitty and Vallance have been co-opted into a policy that's jeapordised health for short term economic goals. They are completely pliable in that cause.

Imagine if we just wore masks during flu season every year.

Well, would it solve much?

Wearing a mask in a restaurant or in a bar or in a pub or going to a concert or a match just isn't feasible.

And large gatherings are probably just as responsible for passing bugs around surely.

I think masks will be the norm/mandatory in shops/retail/supermarkets on transport etc for a while to come, but in any other scenario it's just too much. It's the lockdown which is having an impact, and probably that anybody who would have died of flu this year is most likely (not definitely) getting covid and sadly not making it.

People die. It's crap. But it's kind of what this entire thing called life leads up to. Now, that's not to say we shouldn't do things to keep people alive, or to try and give people a better quality of life.

But this is something unprecedented. However some people want to spin this, this thing hasn't come about because of the west's grubby ways, it's come about because of either a disgusting cultural thing in China or they were faffing with something in the labs that got out into the population. Personally, I think it was much more likely natural and that it developed in the wet markets but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was a combination of the two - not on purpose, but accidentally or whatever. A lab worker getting infected or something in the food chain. God knows, we definitely never will know for sure. Perhaps even the Chinese government don't.

Anyway, it happened, they didn't pick it up and then covered it up or they just covered it up - we won't know for sure. The WHO as of the middle of last Jan hadn't cottoned on to the seriousness of it, and then Europe didn't (Italy and Spain were extremely slow to lockdown too, remember, and it was only after they had major outbreaks which became epicentres in the continent) and of course the UK was a disaster and the same goes for the US, most western nations.

The response could have and should have been far better, but people are acting like this should make us go and live in some ultra sanitized world. No concerts or events in winter, wear a mask everywhere, don't go near a stranger.

Nonsense to me. Some kind of weird dystopian wet dream.

It's the responses to stuff like this - which I stress again, has not happened in over 100 years - which needs to be refined, so that when/if the next one comes (hopefully in another 100 years), they'll be able to be better prepared. I really don't see that any other drastic changes in regards to ripping up 100s of years of cultural ways in the west should have to be done just because of a virus that has an estimated >1% mortality rate (when you take into consideration the millions of people that are either asymptomatic or have had the virus but not officially tested positive/got a test).

I say all that while fully acknowledging the seriousness of it all right now and in the last year and the fear I still have for my family and even myself getting it, and don't want to take away from anyone who has suffered from this in some way indirectly or directly. I've lost a family member, I know it's crap.

But I feel like people saying the whole world needs to change its ways are missing the point, when really it's one particular country that has to take a massive proportion of the blame for the virus itself developing, and then all the other countries (bar a select few) have to look at their own responses so that whenever this happens again, they get it under control quickly.
