Japan, especially given its population density and age profile, has handled coronavirus very well but not without some issues arising.

6,000 deaths in a population almost twice the size of the UK.

Regartdless of the inefficiency of the private sector distributing certain resources to hot spots flagged up there, That article underlines they have hammered Covid19 by hosiptalizing and quarantining people testing positive with the virus.

As do I. If it’s not mandated I think the vast majority of people would bin them immediately.

Think it'll be mandated in shops, supermarkets, public transport etc, perhaps even cinemas and the like...

But just how events, gigs or matches are meant to go ahead with everyone wearing a mask is beyond me

Isn't a gig similar to the cinema?

Surely it will depend on how low hospitalisations and deaths get. If they do hopefully drop to almost nothing there will be a lot less restrictions.

I wouldn't be expecting that again in the next year.

Thing is, when we started having to wear them, it felt weird, and I am sure I am not the only one to have gone back to the car after forgetting to put one on.

But now, its just normal. Keys, wallet, phone, mask.

Many people do wear a mask, unfortunately many don’t even now. Once we get past this Covid I think mask wearing will disappear......

I just cant see it ever becoming a thing outside of a small few certainly outside of winter anyway. I imagine the vegan student hipster types will carry on with it showing what a social conscience they have but no chance you'll see many wearing one in Goodison on matchday or on a saturday afternoon in Matthew Street.

Once everyone's had 2 doses of vaccine I think life will go pretty much back to normal rather quickly.

Hopefully just the blokes - I miss seeing the duck lips around town :(
Anytime I did the primary school pick up, the duck lip mums weren't wearing masks anyway so I am sure you won't be disappointed.
This was even just up to Christmas and that one Monday back.

Interesting the ones who don't believe it and anti vaxers are happy enough shopping around for the cheapest injection of whatever into their lips (I know for a fact a lot of the fillers are not done correctly by qualified people).

Good luck to anyone trying to keep restrictions in place in a vaccinated population.

As with anything in life it will ultimately come down to if the costs outweigh the benefits.

I imagine if the vaccines work and very few are dying/getting ill with Covid anymore the costs of policing masks/social distancing will be worth it when there is little benefit of taking an already thin on the ground police force away from dealing with actual crime.

And I think seasonal Flu has been around humans long enough for people to not really care about it as bad as that sounds - same way in 50 years people will look at covid as something as little as a cold you would think.

We don't have the mindset and culture of the likes of Japan.

When they wear masks its not to stop catching the likes of Flu but not spreading it. The people wearing masks are the ones feeling ill, they don't want other people to catch it off them.

Its political at NHS ward level GP level, and its political with councilors in Local Authorities directing monies towards or away from from various services.... Very naive if you ask me to think there is not a degree politicizing at the very top at these press conferences. Maybe Whitty Vallence Van Tam et al. Square it by the pursing "greater good ". Anyway, you only have to listen to SAGE members who go on to speak independently of SAGE, to get insight of the politics at play.
That is a direct result of the politicians we have empowerd as a public and insidious nature that this group of tories in particular can erode good will and peoples rights with barely a care for any accountability from a press that have lurched further right than ever in my lifetime. I'm lucky enough to know quite a few involved in epidemiology, medical research and healthcare england and the people on that side of the fence have very little polical agenda beyond being forced to 'play the game' for the sake of their careers. Those at healthcare england inparticular are saddened and deeply worried by the move from this government to go away from speaking truth to power. You mention SAGE but they have had to contend woth powerful minisers like the new centralist poster boy Sunak (a hardcore brexiteer) fighting hard against the science and against the lockdowns in some rabid form of short term economics.

Perhaps I am naive for speaking from my limited experience I don't see those involved in the research or practical aspect of the science or medical world being heavily in the face saving politics anymore than they have to to actually do their job in a grubby system that isn't really designed to prioritise them

Talk over here that they might look into having summer open air gigs and either requesting presentation of a recent negative PCR test before admission or requiring people to do an antigen test onsite before entering.
I think in Germany you need an ffp2 mask now? Was wondering if these have become a public resource and being handed out or are the public expected to buy from private firms?
