Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

For sure, I'm not for a minute suggesting people will travel before they've been vaccinated, but given that, contrary to what dear Dido thinks, mutations are inevitable, and therefore some form of Covid will be with us for the foreseeable, we've got to get to a point where what we do makes it safe for travel to occur. I understand all of the vaccine teams are currently testing for the new variants to see efficacy, and while the rates do tend to be lower for, say, the SA variant than for the original one they still seem to be in the comparable range for, say, the flu vaccine (50-60%).

Perhaps, I think we are agreeing that whatever we open up will be different and require a level of strategy and organisation, logistic intervention around vaccines (what is the threshold of vaccine to travel, logistically how does that work, lob Brexit in to: and risk assessment. It’s why I’m saying the getting back to normal narrative is unhelpful politically as it raises expectations and likely not going to happen, but I suppose it’s the spectrum of normality we’re discussing.

I wonder have many went of and booked a couple of weeks in Spain or the like on the expectation, sure we will be back to normal in the summer.

Agree, for example why would you social distance if you and the person you are meeting have both had the vaccine?

Just doesn't make sense. Vaccines should mitigate the risk massively. If the results are similar to Israel here there would be no reason for social distancing or masks to be needed.

The Aussies are back to having full houses for rugby matches, so they’re obviously confident that it’s fine to do so.

I'll be honest, I miss traveling. I work predominantly from home so rely on that to actually see people. The isolation at the moment isn't enjoyable, and much as talking virtually is much better than nothing, it's not the same.

I think it’s more a case of thousands of people have had last years holiday carried over to this year, rather than booking.

I hear you mate, I had Iceland & London booked the month this all stated. Family abroad to mate i know, so a massive pain in the backside for you both I’m sure.

Isn't it funny how when an expert says that lockdown isn't strong enough, he's considered an exemplary scientist:

And when that same expert gives some optimistic news about a potential return to a good bit of normality this summer he's dismissed as a shill and a quack, facilitating the murderers in government...

It's almost like some people WANT this way of life to continue indefinitely. Funny that isn't it? Talk about following the science- does that just mean the science that agrees with your own preconceived ideology?

Again, you're worrying about nothing. That scientist is right. Politically, it's untenable once death, infection and ICU figures plummet to keep this going.

I still stick firmly by this and invite you to vault me if wrong. The end, to all extents and purposes, is very close now.

That really wasn't the point I was making. There's people in this very thread who think the end is years away.

It's more about how if a scientist says something Person A personally agrees with then he's a trusted individual. If the same scientist then says something Person A disagrees with then he automatically becomes discredited and a charlatan. It also seems to be that the more positive/optimistic a prediction the more it seems to annoy some people- for reasons I don't really understand.

Who?

Don't see any. Just some people suggesting caution and sticking to rules now, which is fine and what Hayward says himself. It's not "over" but we'll cross a threshold fairly quickly where it essentially will be. For me, my estimate is 1 May.

The problem I see people having is those who are all "open everything up right this minute, or at the latest 15 Feb when the arl ones are all vaccinated!" which is just a fundamental misunderstanding of how the virus spreads and how vaccines work/how long they take to induce an immune response.

Said before, Boris will not be able to resist the symbolism of Easter for the big announcement. Early April announcement of reopening the country on May 1st with some continued restrictions on large crowds and indoor events (gigs/theatre).

What planet is this educated fool living on?

Prof Andrew Hayward - a member of the UK government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) - says that, once the most vulnerable in society have been vaccinated, a return to normality is within reach.

He tells BBC Radio 4's Today Programme: "Once the most vulnerable people, particularly those over 50 and those with chronic illnesses, are vaccinated then yes I think we can see a significant return to normality.

"That, in addition to the fact coronavirus is a seasonal disease, I think will make a big difference and allow us to open up.

"I think what we'll see is a phased opening up as the vaccination levels increase, and then we will be more or less back to normal for the summer, I would imagine."

That is utter bollocks. No wonder we're snookered when we have a corrupt and murderous political class being informed by arseholes like this.

Do you need me to tell you who posted this? Or can you work it out for yourself?
