Is there any reason italy and spain are having such a torrid time with this? I think they have the two oldest populations in europe, and both have quite a matriarchal society with grand parents living with families etc. With be interested to hear what social factors have affected them so

I think that’s an excellent answer .

however currently in the uk we aren’t testing anyone that hasn’t been admitted to hospital , that was a major part of my poorly made point . As I said if we combine vigorously testing with social distancing or lockdown then yeah I get it but we aren’t so what’s the plan ? Johnson spoke today about increasing testing but apparently that’s some significant time away so I struggle to see how it’s any kind of a plan to potentially lockdown the capital whilst you wait to develop testing kits for a month then roll out testing . surely you’re in April or May before you’re even close to your analogy and potentially complete Socio-economic collapse which is if anything just as damaging as the pandemic.

I’m not being conspiratorial or second guessing the experts but we’ve gone from doing nothing, to then accelerating our position but still not marrying it with testing . I’m just finding it hard to see the logic , again it’s probably my own ignorance but I can’t see how that works , certainly not in the short term .
Just saw this thread from a Washington based virus scientist that does a better job than I did of describing a path forward using the Imperial college report as a starting point.

I think Italy has the biggest Chinese community in Europe, more than likely a lot of travel between the two countries prior to the lockdown added to the age of the population and Spain will be pretty much the same, both might be further down the road than the rest of Europe, when it or of it, ends the other countries might have similar numbers of people affected..

The percentage of adult smokers could be relevant as it effects the lungs ?
More men smoke than women and more men are dying from it ?

During coronavirus South Korea has been a model of transparency and I wish other governments would trust their populations with such data access as I think long term it builds trust, fosters accountability and reduces panic.

Agreed 100% the problem being in the UK and US the current administrations have thrived on misinformation and no accountability to their lies. Now is the time more than ever that they must be supplying the public with as much data as possible to back up their decisions and actions, headlines and bluster filled speeches will not work and if the government dont supply the info then that void will be filled with panic inducing nonsense

Did you see that health fella on tv last night, they showed an advert , then after it had a question and answer bit, one of which is it ok for the kids to go the park and have a kick about, yes as long as the keep their distance?
so the kids go out and get a bit of fresh air, roam about and do what kids do mix with each other, then come home to there family that are in lockdown ect, sort of makes a mockery of the message of not socialising , at worst its dangerous and at best yet more mixed messages and lack of clarity and leadership.

China reporting no new local infections for 2 days, tentative at this stage but at least something positive
It’s a start at least, at what point do the likes of Italy China UK etc..Start lifting these travel ban restrictions? It’s a tough one to call.

thanks so much for engaging with me and for posting this really interesting thread . I notice again this comment

“The first strategy revolves around a massive rollout of testing capacity. We believe that a significant proportion of epidemic transmission is due to mild and maybe even asymptomatic infections “

and I think we’re both on the same page as regards the testing . To me it seems completely counterintuitive to be moving towards lockdown whilst not rolling out mass testing . It just feels like All of the pain and effectively none of the gain .

ffs when you wake up there is a brief moment you forget all this stuff, as if it is a normal morning in March, but as soon as you check WhatsApp notifications, you end up reading "hey, have you seen this ..." and that moment you'd go "oh we are still dealing with this mess"
