It’s an interesting story depending on your viewpoint, the Oxford team seem at heart an ethical and humanitarian bunch. They initially wanted to donate the rights to the vaccine to anyone who wanted to produce it. A lot of cometary on why they changed their mind and AZ came in and things have become how they are, it’s quite a trajectory and I’d say an interesting story.

Maybe what’s important to point out, is drug companies don’t particularly like vaccines and many aren’t interested in them, they don’t make a lot of money, generally low cost and not very frequent - maybe once or maybe twice a year per dose. Drug company like high cost, regular drugs administered very regularly and that’s what they try and develop and sell as a priority.

There is a story to be told around this vaccine race, how things panned out and likely, motivations, company’s involved and our reactions now in the future, it’s going to be interesting.

When the story is told I believe Oxford and AZ will be held up as the example to the world....

They haven't dismissed it as 'not good enough' - they've said they don't have enough data to make a firm conclusion. Which is fine.

The immunogenicity of it is proven, just not the efficacy, although at other age ranges it is - and you don't suddenly turn into a different species aged 65.

I get you hate British nationalism and the Tories, but you don't half let it put the blinkers on for your views.
Yes, not good enough for now. Maybe later when the data supports it...a stance taken by the Yanks.

Decisons based on science and not faith.

Feels political, but it's probably more to do with differing clinical interpretations. UK has seen immunogenicity in studies and thought it's enough, Germans clearly place more emphasis on proven efficacy. Which is... fine I guess, but you'd think given emergency situation that a bit more sense would prevail in terms of authorising the vaccine and it'll be given across the board.

I doubt it’s either to be honest, I’d say it was insufficient sample and because of that data, to draw any concrete conclusion to recommend.

I‘m not really sure that our MHRA works on ‘faith’. Like it or not but the Oxford vaccine will save most of the world from this Chinese virus. The Pfizer jab is too expensive unless they give it away, like AZ for no profit. You should be proud of what Oxford and AZ are doing, but I’m sure you prefer the $20 a shot approach from Pfizer.....

Covid-19 vaccine from Novavax proved nearly 90% effective in preliminary results from a key clinical trial in the United Kingdom, the company said, but in a separate trial appeared far less effective against a new variant of the coronavirus that was first identified in South Africa.

In its 15,000-volunteer U.K. trial, Novavax said, the vaccine prevented nine in 10 cases, including against a new strain of the virus that is circulating there. But in a 4,400-volunteer study in South Africa, the vaccine proved only 49% effective. In the 94% of the study population that did not have HIV, the efficacy was 60%.

It’s unclear whether these data will be enough for U.S. approval, or if the U.S. will wait for further data, as it appears to be doing with vaccines developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. Novavax said it will discuss the findings with the U.K. regulators but made no mention of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Operation Warp Speed, the U.S. government’s vaccine incubator, is running its own large U.S. trial of the Novavax vaccine.

“It is close to 90% efficacy and it shows efficacy against the U.K. and the South African variants. I think these are very positive results,” said Carlos del Rio, a professor of infectious diseases at the Emory University School of Medicine.
