So, what is the efficacy for older groups for the AZ vaccine? You knw, if 8% is not right?

If it was 8% it would never have got to market

You don't find it in any way strange that the EU are absolutely furious (probably fairly so) about AZ not being able to fulfil their order, yet they have also found out that it's only 8% efficacy for over 65s?

If that were true, then either

a) the EU didn't care, which makes them as bad as our Banana Republic

or

b) the EU were going to gamble on being able to use Pfizer and Moderna for every single person over 65, in all 27 member states

With the second jab improving the results up to an acceptable standard?

Could be although still seems low for the initial dose, am trying to recall what those Phase 1/2 trials studies said for the under 65s, can you?

It would also be a marked difference from the initial studies of older patients
ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 appears to be better tolerated in older adults than in younger adults and has similar immunogenicity across all age groups after a boost dose. Further assessment of the efficacy of this vaccine is warranted in all age groups and individuals with comorbidities.

The US double blind Phase 3 results are expected for sometime in Feb which included over 65s so we’ll get some more data then at the very least.
The confidence period for that group went as low as 42% IIRC.

Some suggestion on twitter that the 8% figure was the proprtion of over 65s in the phase 3 testing. A bizarre error of journalism... if true.

Or, they are all in on Pfizer and Moderna and see AZ - as per reports - for under 65s and they can top up their vaccine stocks that way.

Overall on this AZ vaccine: it wont be a waste. It will help out. But I'd rather trust what the EU and their regulators tell us about its efficacy than the UK government and its regulators.

Until there's enough supporting data on the Oxford vaccine's efficacy for the over-65s, that vaccine should be restricted to under-65s, and whatever Pfizer stocks available should be treating the elderly and extremely vulnerable. That just makes sense.

Right now, no advanced western nation has ok'd that vaccine.

C'mon, take the political goggles off for a sec - if a vaccine, entering a human body, at any age, has an efficacy of 8% on anyone, it shouldn't be approved anywhere.

The idea it's 70% effective before your 65th birthday then 8% at the stroke of midnight is just bonkers.

Ha it's amazing how often those maps consistently reflect how stupid Americans are in certain parts of America.

I can understand vaccine hesitancy for some people though, irrespective of education. The US healthcare system has (like its criminal justice system) been very unequal.

In any case it clearly is an issue so the new administration are going to have to craft public messaging to address it if we are going to achieve the necessary levels for herd immunit.

It wont have been given an emergency license on that basis. The license was granted because of the claims of a 90% efficacy rate for the testing group as a whole - all ages - after 2 jabs.

AZ has been held to account by the Lancet among others for their lack of testing on older groups. That is just a fact.

There's a lot at stake.

I have no time for nationalism or patriotism. I could give a flying one which nations funded which vaccine.
I was just making the observation Dave.
I’m sure the tension is replicated all over our fan base and the world.
If we ( UK ) have got spawny with the Oxford vaccine then lucky us. This could have easily gone the other way.
